Base 997.2
would get scratchy.. I had a 3.8 in my cayman RS I build with no cats and the sound was as good as my GT3 . Had a brap sound from the depths of hell, but having the window down was a fumes nightmare
My two observations are: (1) S vs Base is largely academic and (2) most of the fancy options matter much less as this generation of cars ages. Bonus points for cars without some of those things is that there are less pricey breakables on the lesser equipped cars. In my opinion, the use case and driving experience of the 9x7 gen cars is now different. Gone is the still contemporary thing and in comes the older car experience where most of the fancy techs gizmos are either comically obsolete (hello nav and iPod port!) or broken.
Just find the best one you can afford and enjoy this little segment in time. Theres a bell curve with each 911 generation from new(er) to no one cares to classic/preservation grossly overly simplified, but still. Seems like were getting close to the time where people pine for the last of the smaller analog cars and originality and preservation may soon be the best part of the experience, warts and all.
They aint makin em like this ever again.

to be kinda rare anyway
I have owned a 2011 997.2 base with manual transmission for over 12 years. I did a build order after test driving both the S and base. The S came standard with PASM, whereas the base did not, and frankly, I preferred the standard suspension, although the different standard wheel sizes may have influenced my impression. And I wanted to keep the vehicle simple because I wanted it to last a long time, and PASM was in its early stages at that time.
Money was a consideration at that time, and I planned on selling my 1985 911 to do the deal, but with the decision to buy a base model, there wasn’t as much pressure to sell the 1985, and I am delighted to say, I still own it! Back then, a 1985 911 was selling for about the difference between the cost of a new base and S. I certainly lucked out!
Anyway, the base 997.2 is a delightful vehicle, and, in fact, by the 2011 model year the base incorporated a couple of features which had previously been exclusive to the S, to wit, the self adjusted clutch and the sport steering wheel, at no additional cost.
Don’t let the milage bother you. These are robust, reliable vehicles. Mike
