Why is it so difficult/expensive to make the 9a1 dfi engines make exhaust music???

997.2 with Sharkwerks bypass and IPE Valved Exhaust.....the sound is glorious.

There's a huge difference between obnoxiously loud exhausts and well tuned ones that sing in the higher rev range and have good, mean (but not antisocial) growls around town.

Recently when walking from the commuter train to the parking garage a total stranger looked at me and said "Yesterday I thought I felt an earthquake." Without missing a beat I said "Did I happen to drive past you?"....he replied "Yep".

I have a 2012 GTS with PSE. Added the SW bypass and sounds much better. But the best DFI engine sound came with my 2013 Boxster S with PSE. Best exhaust/intake noise I ever heard, bar none!

Sorry but that confuses me. The X pipes IS the bypass so what's the configuration you're referring to? PSE and Sharkwerks together in quiet mode is almost stock quiet to my ears so just curious what you had on your car that made you embarrassed since you can't have two bypass components.

I agree just the X pipe didn’t really do it for me either, then I did the Gundo hack also and it didn’t sound like a modern sports car more old school. So I tried the modified side mufflers with my factory center muffler and for me that was the ticket. I wouldn’t want it any louder on a cold start.
I wish Akropovic still sold a complete titanium system.

Honestly the 2 inch gundo is insane value, even at $500. Now I have a cab so hear it louder than a coupe would allow, I also have the family in the car abou70pc of the time so I don't need crazy loud. It's a very pleasant sound, its quite gruff and tough with zero drone and suits the car perfectly.
Can you do better? Sure, but now youre at $3k.

I thought I read that gundo hack wasn’t worth doing for the 9a1.
thoughts?

I found it the perfect solution over the stock sound. If it were just me I'd go for a bit more volume but my car is not just mine, it's family adventure, top down weekend drive car so I wanted more volume but not obnoxious.

Like women (or men), a lot is so subjective when it comes to aftermarket exhaust components and systems. What sounds good to one person is ****e to another. I've been around here long enough to know that for most peeps, a CMB is good to sublime, although the aftermarket brands do some slightly different. Sharkwerks is the most popular but there are others. Also, the X-pipe design is also noticeably different than the cross-over design. Check out videos from Fabspeed to notice the difference. They once offered the cross-over design and moved to the X-pipe design.
To up the ante even more, go to straight headers or performance headers with 200-cel cats + CMB. It is even more aggressive and IMO, sounds glorious/perfect with the right amount of volume, growl, and no drone. If you have PSE, it is an actual good use for it because it makes a difference and allows you to drive incognito or get your peacock on.

Sorry to confuse you. The Gundo hack, it’s a bypass welded in before the side muffler. The X pipe(I had the sharkwerks unit) is a removal.

My 997.2 C2S with factory PSE and an added Sharkwerks bypass wasn't loud enough for me. If I kept the car, I would have went for a full system, maybe Tubi. It sounded like a crisp and clean sound when you got above 4k, but I would have preferred a bit more sound throughout the entire rev range. My friends 3.4L Cayman R ( @doworkexotics ) with an FVD exhaust rear section sounds absolutely perfect even though it's a DFI motor. The 991.1 C2S 3.8 also sounds amazing, but that has piped in sound. Even then, the exterior sound on the 991.1 C2S is better.
My 997.1 GT3 with Sharkwerks bypass is what I would consider perfect Porsche sound. Just loud enough, perfect tone.

No need to apologize. I'm very familiar with the Gundo hack but it's usually not referred to as a bypass but rather modified side mufflers. So you weren't happy with the $250 to $500 Gundo hack depending on who you go to. They all do the same thing. Some do it better than others based on posts here. Good example of "you get what you pay for". I wouldn't expect the Gundo to sound like the factory PSE for a fraction of the PSE price.
