S2-S40 were the ones that I used. You can see the pics of them in the earlier posts. Just so you know, they are almost a perfect fit, but do force the factory mounts to bow a little bit due to the tweeters, but once you put the grill over, they look fine. A lower profile 4" speaker without the protruding tweeter would probably fit perfectly, but I wanted to keep the Alpines there for consistency.[/QUOTE]

Do you know the mounting depth limitation on the rear speaks? Tyring to narrow down some 4" sets.. though I should probably do what you guys are doing and just stick to the alpines. I'm already alpine tweets, s2-s40 and s2-s80. may want to also put in a different 2 3/4" mid in center of dash but not alot of options there.

I don't know the mounting depth offhand, but I was looking at these before I decided on the Alpines. They may provide a better fit.

I wouldn't bother replacing the rears, honestly. It's a PITA to remove all the trim to do it, and you should only be using them for fill anyway so they don't have to do much. I did the job because I had a broken terminal to one of my OEM speakers and I can tell you the rears don't add much.

Sound field should come from the front. Set the fader full front, then dial towards the rear until the rears add some fill but the sound still comes from the front. That's it.

Moose - I agree. I thought that the rear 4" set would be super easy to get to and just pop the grill off. NOPE. I see it is pretty involved to get to them so I'm just going to leave them alone. Thus far I have put in the Sony 6000 deck, a backup cam and the 2 alpine tweets. I have a new set of S2-S40 4" sitting on the workbench and am waiting on a new set of S2-S80C 8" to arrive from UPS so I can get those in there. I also have a new set of the OEM ASK 8" but I chose to not put those in and do the Alpine 8" instead.

I actually found it super easy to pop off the grill and remove/replace the rear speakers. Wondering if I messed something up? It was just one fastener to remove after the grill popped off.

I'm in a 987.1 This thread is in the 997 area so maybe it's easy on a 997. =)

Ah crap, I always forget which forum I'm in. They're a PITA on the 987, yes, dunno about the 997.

Either way they don't really add much, but if they're easy to replace on a 997 then they're at least a might-as-well, I just wouldn't bother buying super high-end speakers for them.

Job is done. Tweets are in, new S2-S40c 4" mids and S2-S80c 8" bass drivers all installed. Ended up with an extra set of tweeters since both sets come with tweets and its the only way to get a non-coaxial version of each speaker. I also have a brand new set of 8" factory speakers I am gong to sell. I bought them first but decided to go all Alpine. I probably could have left the facotry mids in there and even usedd the factory replacement 8" speakers vs. the Alpines. All is in and all is sounding good - no more farts and rattles from speakers.

Getting the door panel off was a pain in the ***, started at passenger side first which made doing driver side easier. I bought extra clips on Amazon and ended up needing to use 4 of them, so I only f'd up 4 clips. clips i bought
Amazon Amazon

The factory tweeters are fine and the factory mid's are fine.. but man, those original 8" are COMPLETELY fubar'd. Check it out!!

Excellent sound now though, I am sure.
