Default Radiator fan control module replacement

Hi everyone. The cooling fans on my ‘05 S stopped working. I tested both fans by putting 12v to them and they both work. Voltage from the fan control module is only outputting about 5.7v. I just ordered a replacement fan control unit. My question is; will I need to re-code the replacement fan controller when I install it?

I don’t have a diagnostic tool to code it so hopefully it doesn’t need to be coded.

I am interested in how this works out - I have the "opposite" issue - after the car sat for months on a battery maintainer, after starting the car, about 30-60 seconds later, both fans come on "high" and stay like that for the duration of the drive. https://rennlist.com/forums/997-foru...when-cold.html

I have a Durametric and tried to control the fans with it but the labelling in their software left me some questions that they have not answered, and in the end the results were ambiguous.

I was thinking that my fan "computer" is on the fritz. My next was going to be to take the car to an indy that had a PIWIS and see what they had to say.

To the degree you can and are willing, please capture as many details about your journey to replacing your front/fan control module. Thank you.

Quick update on my issue. All good news! I replaced my fan control (p/n 997.618.436.00) and both fans came on. The fan control unit can be swapped in 30min or less. It took longer to get the fender liner off than it did to swap the part.

I want to point out that I actually took my chances and bought a used fan control from a reputable eBay Porsche parts supplier. It was $25 vs $275 for a brand new unit from Porsche. I believe the last two digits of the part numbers identify the revision of the part. So in my case my control unit is .00 vs the replacement part ending in .03 vs the new part available from Porsche which is a .04.

Additionally, the part swap didn’t require any coding. I’m not getting any CEL or error codes.

Sorry to revive an old thread but I’m just starting to try to solve my fan issue. When testing the fan with 12v are there only 2 pins in the plug, or do I need to target specific wires/pins?

Try to locate an electrical wiring diagram (I'll start looking too). I think only two wires are involved but also perhaps PCM or resistor mechanism to provide for the speed control.

Here's a snippet of the radiator fan wiring.

the pin out is on the label of the fan controller. See A1 and A2 for the +/- of the fan plugs.

Do you have a Durametric or access to one? You could see if the fans can be controlled by the Durametric (probably indicating the module is good).

@2006 997.1 I think one can "rent" a Durametric or PIWIS - not sure of any details. It looks like the module is about $150 new or $60 used. It doesn't appear to need any "handover". You could try just swapping the part.

That’s what I was thinking. Is it only one on the right/passenger side wheel well?

OK that’s great news. I will buy one just like you did and install it and let you know how it works. Thanks for all your help!
