Finally heard back from them. Simon at RPM Technik stated that the marks would go away after its prepped and cleared. I'm waiting for an answer to what looks like a portion that was repaired. I've never bought a unfinished carbon part before so this is very new to me. I'm also going to take it to a well known porsche body shop today to see what they have to say.

FWIW, I've ridden carbon fiber bikes for years, and one of my favorites is from 2010 - clear coat, raw carbon (no paint) - and after > 30K miles or so, zero marks or cracking of the clear coat. I'd ask for a full exchange.

as per RPM Technik and the manufacturer that makes the carbon ducktail “the marks are from the tooling. This will not be visible once it has been prepped and painted."

I took the ducktail to a well known porsche restoration shop (RSR autobody) and he says he see's things like this all the time. He said with the price I paid for it and the quality of the build its not bad and said he can make it look good for what I wanted to do with it.

Needless to say I'm a bit disappointed with the finish. The time it would take to send back wait for a new one, and potentially see other blemishes on the new one I get, I opted to trust the bodyshop and move forward with it.

It seems as if you don't get the ducktail prepped and clear coated from RPM Technik, they ship the ducktail straight from the manufacturer to you. If I would have done it again, I would have probably just have RPM technik do the prep and clear coat so that they would be able to see things first hand over in the UK and fix whatever is needed on their end.

I'll follow up with photos once I receive and have the ducktail installed on my car if anyone is interested. For what its worth, the body shop said this is one of the lightest ducktails he's ever seen and said the build quality is nice.

Sounds like it will work out for you eventually.

I’m in London and RPM are a 30 min drive from me, I had them supply and install over 2 years ago and it has been flawless.

I can advise that they are one of the best respected independent Porsche specialists in the UK.

Great looking car! I originally wanted the 3rd break light but they eventually did away with that mold and only provide the ducktail without the light. Glad to hear they did a good job on your car and they're well respected out in the UK. Honestly one of the reasons why I chose them was because of that. Did you leave any bits of carbon exposed on the ducktail at all? were you able to take a look at the ducktail prior to it being prepped and painted?

No I don’t have any exposed carbon, I wanted the 911 badge to be in exposed carbon but the cost was silly as I needed to pay for the clear coat finish and then have it sprayed.

From the pics of the "spider web" like cracks - looks like cracks in the resin from bad handling/impacts during shipping.
Was it shipped in a box or any external evidence of shipping damage?

it was shipped in a box and did look like it was opened at one point because there was some dhl reseal tape on it, I’m assuming customs might have opened it? Not entirely sure. Packaging wasn’t the best since it was just bubble wrapped and put into a box.

Did you have the option of getting the one with the 3rd brake light?

Nope. They told me they discontinued the mold.

Does the geometry of the RPM Technik ducktail make the rear center brake light visible? Seems like if one is going for the Sport Classic look, deleting the center brake light defeats the look

My understanding is that the centre (third) brake light was only available on the gen 2 ducktail as it was made from the sport classic mould. The gen 1 and 996 did not have a centre brake light.

You will see that I have had a delete panel installed in place of the original third brake light, this was inexpensive at circa £200 for the OEM part + paint.

Just got some pictures of the progress of the painting and I have to say I'm very impressed and happy with the results. I haven't seen the finished product in person but should be able to pick up the car later this week. From what I can see it looks like they got all the marks out. Was trying to see how I could attach a video but can't figure it out. Anyways, I'm very excited to see this thing on the car and will take some pictures of it on the car once I get a chance. As for RPM Techniks, I had explained to them that the body shop had to do a bit more work to repair all the marks and the repaired area on the underside. They asked me to send them an invoice from the bodyshop of just the cost to repair in which I did. I haven't heard from them and its been about a month but will follow up once I get my car back. Major thanks to RSR Autobody in Wyckoff, NJ. Everyone I spoke to recommended this place but had told me I would have to wait months but once I showed him the project he took me in right away. Pino was great to work with and showed me all the wild projects they're working on, mostly restorations.
