Default gas cap tether

997.1 How do you remove/replace tether on gas cap? Does cap come apart? Tether is too solid to stretch over.

It’s basically a small plastic pop rivet. Just use a small nail and press the center pin through (it will fall behind) and the rivet will come out and thus release the tether. Then, you can reuse the rivet by just pressing the center pin back in the hole of the rivet.

Thank you. That part was easy. How to get it off the cap itself to replace a new one on the cap itself? It is not pliable enough to stretch over (does not stretch at all), even with any lubrication

My tether was broken and I ended up just buying a whole new cap, to both replace the tether and ensure a good seal on the cap itself. I did not try and replace just the tether.

I’ve never replaced just the tether so not sure. The upgraded aluminum gas cap comes with several different tethers to use so I would think there’s got to be a way to remove and replace the tether…just not sure how to do it.

I just used a short piece of glue style shrink tubing to join the broken ends... 5c fix! It's black and you can't see it unless you look for it.

I recently did this as well, adding a small piece of ty strap with black silicone for his measure. It's a bit stiffer than before but I can live with that.

I remove mine and put the cap on the pump as I'd prefer it not fall off the little hook and rub across the paint under the cap opening.

One of the first things I remove. If it falls out of the holder it smacks the fender.

I do the same and for the same reason, well almost!

I place mine against the windshield and resting on the wiper blade so it doesn't roll... and as a explicit visual reminder to put it back before driving off.

You know there is a little hook on the filler door to hang the cap from the tether? I actually didn't know it when I got the car and forget how I discovered it. I find it stays put nicely there.

There are 2 plastic pins connecting the tether to the cap... same thing, just push from one side the pins will come out... this separates the tether from the cap...

This is what I did. Third party one looks and functions just like OEM and was not expensive.
