The risk is for you to decide, but I would update above:

A engine rebuild is more than $18k, I would figure $25k minimum.

The 997.2 does not make you immune from expensive failures, as you highlighted the PDK isn’t cheap. Additionally, while less likely, there have been instances of scoring.

Now I do think the PDK is a far better experience than than the Tip

That is the Larger better more robust IMS Bearing ----> Engine numbers higher than #68509791 is the Larger Bearing---> His engine# is 68600760

Default PPI Suprise!!!

Fellow members,
In the Atlanta Metro Area...NO Porsche Dealerships will do a PPI on a Porsche...claim its a liability issue!!!
Am I the last one to Know?
All across the USA?

All across the USA?
Many Porsche & Mercedes Dealerships will not do PPI's or Bore Scope Inspections. A known fact for years.
I think the PPI's came back to bite them and caused bad reviews so they stopped doing them.
I've used a Porsche Dealer in Burlingame Calif for many PPI's & BSI's over the past 12 years - The Dealership was called Rector Porsche but now called Porsche Burlingame.. They still do PPI's & BSI's.

If you think about it, a disgruntled customer can cause a lot of negative publicity on Yelp and other review websites.
Whenever you get a PPI performed by ANY shop, you sign a waiver holding shop harmless from anything resulting from the PPI. Just like a house inspector does.
So the liability issue is all about reviews and past bad customer situations

Understand how it can be frustrating. Especially when you get all amped up when you find a 997 you want to buy.
Also keep in mind it's important that you have a PPI done at a shop that's not affiliated with the Porsche you want to buy. Shops that have serviced a car for owner/seller want to keep the positive relationship and sometimes will hold back information on a PPI to protect that relationship. I have found it best to use Indy Porsche Specialist shops and there are usually many good Porsche shops near Porsche Dealerships. At least that's been my experience.

My shop that I have used for 36 years 5 blocks from my house (Aker's Porsche) is extremely upfront and honest and no BS/games. They are too busy and have huge customer list and could care less if customer(me) doesn't like the results of a PPI they have performed. Just the way they roll and their reputation comes 1st.
Unfortunately their high standards aren't the norm in the Porsche Specialist shop world.
Marque Motors in Portland is another great honest Porsche Specialist shop Not sure where you're shopping but those are some recommendations for NW Seattle/Portland/SF Bay Area.

I'm sure there are many qualified Indy Porsche Specialist shops in the Atlanta area to do PPI & Bore Scope Inspection.
Bore Scope Inspection very important on ALL 997 but especially the 997"S" 3.8L engine. Can't emphasize enough getting the BSI will save peace of mind, resale value and costs going forward.

Hey Groov,

Sold my 997 TT about 8 years ago...now I cant bring myself to spent +$30K to buy it back!!!
Thant having been said, IYO, from an investment standpoint, would I be better off buying a 996TT with lets say 8oK miles or stick with this 06 cs Tip I'm looking at.
Could justify the extra$$$$ if I was fairly certain it would hold value better in the long run than the 06 CS Tip.
TT would eliminate most if not all engine issues...IMS, Bore Scor.
Whatca think?

I hear ya---> 7-9 years ago I had a flurry of 996 & 997 cars - Mostly C4S's - Bought them in California and drove them home to Seattle. Some I sold soon after some I kept for a year. That was back when you could buy a 997C4S w/60K miles for $32K.
Had 3 996 C4S and 3 997 C4S in an 8-9 year period. Also had 2 997S and a 997 C4 Cabriolet before buying my current 2006 997 C4. All nice cars and most when Bore Scoring wasn't even a subject.
Before I answer your question I need some info from you:
1. As far as the 06 CS Tip, do you want a Automatic Transmission car? or would you prefer manual trans if you could find one?
2. Buying a 996TT sounds good but at 80K miles, those Turbo's seem to lose value as they climb closer to 100K miles so would that said, would you limit your driving if you had Turbo? Do you care about resale?

I've noticed the Turbos get hit hard when they climb over 100K. The Non-Turbo 997/C4 & S all remain fairly strong when the miles go 100K+. These cars are amazingly tight if well serviced/well kept.

At my age, might be a little easier on the aging body to drive the tip...although I've never driven one. And I know the tips are trending way below a manual.
Guess If I found the same mileage C6S (47K) I could manage the 6S. Trouble is, went by a dealership and drove a 997.1 100K miles in a 6S and I think the car was so ragged out it was not at all pleasurable to drive...really turned me off. Thats when I start including Tips in my search.

Couldn't bring myself to pay an extra $30k + for the same year and lets say 75K miles. Wouldn't be a DD and if I put 3K on each year.
That's why I thought about a 996TT..more affordable, same thrill, and even at let's say 65K miles, don't think I'd even come close to 80Kmiles
