Default TPMS

Hi,
Bought a 2006 911s a few weeks ago. My first 911 but had many Cayenne's. I was driving back from work and caught something in tire and need help. It has a fairly new set of Hankood Ventus V12 305/25/20 wrapping Techart wheels. TPMS did not indicate low tire pressure and light does not come on at startup. Wondering if TPMS is turned off and if so does dealer have to turn it back on or can a tire shop do it?

Also, any recommendations on tire shop to get replacement? Tire Rack has tire but they only ship to MR Tire here. I thought Butler Tire would have a relationship with them..
Any advice is greatly appreciated.
TIA
MR

I've had good luck with Big O Tires.

until you get tpms worked out, be sure to manually check tire pressures before driving.

Are you sure you have TPMS? It was not standard equipment until model yr 2007 for the 997.

Just because you have the icon on the dash doesn’t mean you have the TPMS option because it was offered as an extra cost option on that model year but not standard equipment until 2007. Check your tire valve stems to see if they have the metal TPMS stems that look like bolts that screw into the wheel like the one in my pic below on my car, or if yours are rubber valve stems or metal that do not have a bolt where it meets the wheel rim.

Also, if you do have it, you will be able to see the tire pressures in your dash like below when you cycle through your dash functions with the stalk on the left side of the steering wheel. If your car did originally have the extra cost feature of the TPMS, there is a chance that the previous owner of your car had it coded out when they installed the Techart wheels, and if that’s the case, you would need to have dealer or someone with a scan tool that could turn the feature back on and then you’d also need to purchase new TPMS sensors to have installed on your wheels. Perhaps you can use your car’s VIN number to see if it was ordered with the TPMS?

I’m getting a set of new tires Michelin Pilot 4S from Discount Tire. They want me to change the Tire pressure monitor sensors with their own. I have a 2011 997.2 with TPMS and they are working. Should I change them, will they work the same, or leave my old ones?

Eventually the ones you have will die. Whether or not to change them now (pre-emptively) depends on a few things. Will you be devastated if one goes out and you start getting a warning light? If so how much will it bother you to pay more to replace sensors when you're not already paying to mount new tires? Do you only drive a few miles a year (and it will be more likely for these sensors to die before you replace tires again) or will you be replacing tires again soonish? How much is Discount Tire going to over charge for the sensors?

This is opposite to what I understand. If the car is not driven, the TPMS sensor is essentially in sleep mode and not transmitting, hence not consuming power. It has a rotational sensor that senses the vehicle is in motion and will wake up and transmit data at a regular interval. So, presumably, if the car is not driven a lot, the sensor could last a relatively long time, 7-10 years is not unheard of.

My 2010 with August 2009 build date is still going strong on the original sensors. The 997.2 system was a big technological upgrade from the 997.1 cars.

Apologies, as this is not particularly constructive, but I had to chuckle at this clear sign that OP spends waaaay too much time on BaT. ;-)

I just swapped mine on a 2009 with a new tire install. I got the ones off tire rack (for $69 each) and they work great. The Porsche ones were basically $100 more apiece for Suncoast.

They still worked but were getting kind of slow to read in the winter. Depending on how fast you go through tires it probably makes sense to do it now.

Did the same for my 2009 C2 about a year ago when I purchased new tires. Although my car only had ~25K miles on the odometer, I figured that because of age it seemed like the right thing do.

I bought mine from these folks and they easily synchronized after driving just a few miles. Also, at $132 for a full set, it was hard to pass up. BTW, they're made by HUF which Porsche resells with their logo at almost 4X the price.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but when you get new sensors and install them into the wheels, do you have to program the serial numbers to the car? Or do you just tell the system to relearn the TPMs and it happens automatically?
