Default TPMS questions

Hey all,

I have a 2009 turbo 6 speed (odd year as this is the transition year where the engine is still the 3.6l mezger but has the newer PCM, ect) that I am having some issues with the TPMS. The car has OEM rims with summer tires but I picked up a set of 991 rims with rubber (I need to run spacers for these to not rub but overall pretty decent). They came with 991 tpms and I assumed these would work with the 997 turbo. I have an Autel MK808TS scan tool with TPMS programmer. I checked and saw the status of batteries were still good so decided to run them. Threw the gauge cluster I set these up as my winter tires and let the system do its thing. Sure enough after awhile the warning light came on and it wasn't displaying any pressures. I did some research and found that maybe I needed a different tpms so I ordered some online (still waiting on the seller to get back to me). I installed these myself and programmed to the car (using both the gauge cluster as well as my tpms scan tool). Same thing after a while I get the error and there is no pressures displayed.

Is there something I am missing or is it possible that I have a couple sets of non-compatible tpms sensors? I assumed that since the scan tool was able to program the sensor IDs to the car and I could trigger them all through the tool that I should be good. Its not the end of the world as I dont drive the car much but I am a bit **** about warnings and lights coming on in the dash.

Thank you

From what I recall 991+ sensors are the same frequency at 433mhz but different refresh rate or something like that - aftermarket are bit different then OEM so they may not work. Your sensor are most likely 997.1 spec hence the incompatibility.

1) disable the TPMS system - simple by unplugging the module and coding out using diag tool - 30min ==> $150 max if done by a shop
or
2)purchase new sensors and install them - anywhere between $300-750...

I would just order new ones from tire rack or have your local tire shop do it. 2009 should be 997.2 but the turbo was an odd one with a mix of parts. Unsure how the tpms are.

Yeah I have a PWIS so maybe I just code it out for my winter months and code it back in for my summer tires. Just seemed very odd that the sensors I ordered said they would work for my car but again with the 2009 turbo not sure exactly what the tpms need to be. If I find myself putting many miles on the winter tires I will just code it out with PIWIS but most likley wont worry about it for the month or 2 I will need to have my winter tires on for (Im also not around much in the next month).

Thanks

I've put two new set of sensors on my wheels (summer and winter sets). I purchased from TireRack. No programming was necessary. Apparently the proper sensors for a 997.2 have "vehicle specific protocols" pre-programmed. This was on a 2011 997.2. Not sure if that helps you with the transitional 2009.1.2.

The sensors get mounted to the rim, then I do the learn procedure from the MFD and it works.

I picked up a used set of Turbo Twist copies from an ex-997.1 owner for winter use on my 2009 Targa 4S. Shop removed the old TPMS as batteries were gone and frequency not compatible with 997.2

First tried replacing them with aftermarket TPMS option that tech claimed Porsche compatibility. Never worked despite multiple programming attempts using their tool and onboard learning routines.

Next ordered some Huf/BH Sense OEM replacements via Amazon. Look correct, but the valve stem diameter is too big for older wheels.

<sigh> Will have to try again in the spring after summer wheel changeover using thinner valve stems.

Does anyone know about valve stem size changes from 997.1 to 997.2 in addition to the TPMS frequency change?

PS, the tirerack sensors are HUF OEM Intellisense. Very easy, no worries as to whether they’re real or knock-offs.

For TURBO models

997.1 are an RDE001 and the only options are Porsche dealer or Huf RDE001's and you can get them at various places.
997.2 are an RDE048 and you have a couple more options as you can get them from the dealer, you can get RDE048's or now you can get Huf UVS7050's that can be programmed. All Huf brand Sensors.

All Porsche sensors are auto relearn which means you DO NOT need a TPMS tool to tell the car it has new TPMS just go through the onboard computer, drive and they sync up.

Only new and genuine stuff here. https://www.tpmsbargains.com/Porsche...PMS-s/1120.htm
