ducktail ducts
I have a new to me (and pretty much new, 6500 miles) 997.2 4S that I got from RAC via pcarmarket ( I had a great experience working with both companies btw, and the virtual auction was a blast). After 6 years of driving electric cars to try to beat the so cal traffic, I moved to the country and am ecstatic to be back in a 997 driving the heck out of the country roads. This is my third 997, and I'm sure y'all agree there is something magical about them. The car is a 2009 meteor grey launch edition that has been nicely upgraded by the previous owner, including installation of a beautiful Getty Design ducktail. As I am going through everything to get acquainted with the car, I noticed that the ducktail ducts bend towards the front of the car when the lid is closed rather than making contact with the air intakes. The drivers side duct is getting slightly smashed by the oil cap. So, it seems that the air is coming through those ducts into the front of the engine bay, not directly to the intakes, and the intakes are open to the engine compartment. I have searched the internet, RL, and the company website and I cannot find any info or pics of the inside of the ducktail to show the proper setup regarding those ducts. Are they on backwards? Wrong ducts? OK the way they are? I always read the 997 forum with amazement at how much expertise is shared here, and am hoping to get some insight.

Wrong deck lid that somebody tried to make fit. The ducts are supposed to seal around the airbox as otherwise you are just sucking in hot air from the engine compartment. You can have this fixed by moving the snorkel openings to the correct location or you can just remove the snorkels and drive it like that. It's not going to hurt the engine but you'll likely be down on power as you are not channeling cold ambient air into the airbox and intake. If you decide to fix, I can take measurements for you.

The lid seems to fit on the outside, but the ducts are not lined up. The ducts are pretty stiff, so cannot bend them into place. I can try to switch them to face the other way and see if that helps. But I definitely want to make it right. What do you propose regarding measurements and a fix?

You need to have the deck lid modified by a competent body shop to fit the ducts where they belong. I can send you measurements. Looks like a 997.1 lid that was incorrectly modified. The best way is to just buy the right lid. The easiest is to just remove the two snorkels and live without them.
This is what the 997.2 OEM decklid looks like.

How convenient that you had a pic of the underside of the lid. Thanks. I was able to locate some 997.2 ducts to buy, shaped like yours, for $60 each. I’ll try that and see if it’ll fit.

Based on that photo, your ducts appear to be flipped the wrong way and need to be rotated 180 degrees…I think

Looks like the wrong ducts. You need ones shaped like those on the yellow decklid yours look like they may be turbo ducts.
You can also just remove them. The amount of outside cold air that will flow through the scoops on your decklid and be available for the airbox to ingest is enormous. The only time you'd see a performance difference from not having them would be on a stationary Dyno or sitting in traffic, and how much performance so you need in traffic?

Thanks for all the help. Southbay, you were correct! The previous owner or installer had the ducts flipped the wrong way. The sides were actually obstructing the intakes. In that position they looked like completely different shape than what would fit there. Flipped them 180, they line up perfect, except for the one edge that was crushed by the oil cap all that time.
Thanks again, good to know y’all are out there looking out for each other.

Glad to hear it was an easy fix
If you want to replace the damaged one, here’s the part number and it’s ~$200.
