Petza914 you are 100% correct, I should have taken it back immediately but it was then so subtle (not like the current racket on the video I posted) I wasn't sure that it was in fact sounding differently. My wife was with me and though I mentioned several times that the car sounded differently she said " I can't hear what you are referencing". That combined with the fact that we had been shopping all day while the car was being worked on and we were tired as we drove the 80 miles home probably clouded our judgement. Plus we are both over 70 with not the best hearing. We live in Michigan and the car goes into storage Nov1 then when it comes out 8 months later you find yourself trying hard to recall what it sounded like when you put it away. Even then sound was barely noticed just driving around locally and didn't rear it's ugly head until I drove on a 200 mile trip to northern Michigan.

Default Help with 997.2 4S front diff- Resolved

If it turns out the internals are trashed and it can't be refurbished I will probably opt for the kit being sold to convert from AWD back to RWD and continue to drive the car while I search for a good used unit . The labor estimate from the Indy to remove, ship and replace the unit is approx. $3200. There are a few reports on the forum of others that have experienced front diff failure but it is not real common. I think the Indy did everything correctly when the unit was serviced and the failure was merely coincidental. The car does have 80,500 miles on it.
Moving forward I will keep you all posted.
Well we are finally getting to the end of this journey with my 2009 4S PDK 80,500mile car with a satisfactory outcome. Some takeaways: #1 Driveline whine is NOT normal. if you are experiencing a driveline whine, don't wait, get it investigated ASAP. #2 If the whine is traced to your 4S front differential , Roger Brown at Californiamotorsports is the go to guy for further investigation and replacement of seals and bearings if the internals aren't trashed ( mine were, photo attached and soon to be included in Roger's wall of shame gallery) . #3. There are no 2009 compatible used 4S front diffs for sale anywhere in the United States. #4 Californiamotorsports was able to locate a rebuildable core in their inventory AND verify that the only way that kind of damage could occur was in a "low fill/no fill " situation. #5 If you have a good established relationship with a reputable Indy that serviced the car, they will own the mistake they made, apologize sincerely and profusely and completely cover the entire cost. #6 There are things that occur in your life that will restore your faith in humanity. My car passed the road test yesterday and (bonus) they are having the car detailed before I pick it up.

Good news and thanks for updating us, also thanks for the good word on California Motor Sports. As to the bolded section I would not go that far, but good to read there are still honest individuals out there.

So, in a nutshell they drained the front diff gear fluid and didn’t refill it ? They drained the awd controller and did refill this?

Also, what is the pic of? I don’t recall a place to capture the oil beneath the diff axel seal .

I think it was the other way around, the diff was drained and refilled but the awd controller was drained but not refilled. The photo is the pumpkin with parts and pieces of the bearing laying in there
