New head unit - install and pricing ...thoughts?
Hey gang. About to get my P car! Very excited but since I'm going to be driving it a lot, I want carplay, bluetooth etc. Called my local place, Abt Appliance, and I know they do fantastic work. But...seems that if I want the latest Alpine unit (yes, with the e brake bypass) and the backup cam (which I might forego at $300), it's about $1800 for the install. According to them...there's $760 in parts to get it to work with the Bose system. Anyone know if this is accurate? It very well could be but in my searches, I don't recall a mention that these weren't just plug n play. TIA

From what I've gleaned - the Bose amp needs a fiber optic signal to work. So unless you want to replace the amp which will require additional wire pulling you'll need a preamp to fiber module. I ordered a Chinese one for about $100 that a few here have used. Most pro shops are going to use a better brand one that costs 3x - 4x more. That's what is driving up the price probably.

You can do it for cheaper, but there is apparently a shortage of decent, mid-range head units at the moment. I put my set up together last spring. I wrote it up here:

The price you are being quoted is about right for a Bose install using the Euro Motorspeed adapter = I did this in April and all in - head unit with wireless car play and b/u camera was about my cost for pro shop install
