Thanks for the update! I think I might just bite the bullet and go with someone else installing it all since I do want a backup camera as long as they’re in there and I forgot I want Sirius radio.

Yes you can get a back up camera and Sirius radio with either option, just costs more for the additional equipment and adapters! I have thought about getting Sirius Satellite radio and a back up camera for my Porsche as well, I almost always have the top down, so I really do not feel the need for the back up camera. I have Sirius satellite radio in several of my other cars already. I am going to experiment with the Sirius app with one of my other cars that has Apple Car play and see how well it works in the areas where I drive most. I will let you know how that works out.
Once you have Carplay you have access to Pandora and Spotify et al, which I find to be 100x better than any of the satellite providers, especially from a sound quality standpoint.
My wife and I drove up to Prescott in her BMW X5 this past weekend which has Apple Car Play and Sirius Satellite radio, I went back and forth between the satellite radio and the Sirius app on Apple care play, There was very little difference in quality and I did not lose reception when using the app even going through what are usually dead zones with the significant change in elevation going up North.
I will definitely not waste my money getting Sirius Satellite in my Porsche. With Apple car play, the Sirius app and others will be just fine.
yeah, I saw that, looks pretty easy. Will have to do some of that to install this new phone mount i got. I don't like sticking things to the dash or air vents.
I have decided on the Dynavin unit. It appears to have the best integrated system for the 997 Porsche with almost everything "in the box". The only extras I will need are a few MOST bypass loops. Believe it or not, I am having trouble finding someone in Phoenix to install a Dynavin unit. The "highly recommended" installer will only install a Pioneer unit, and specifically only the AVH 4500NEX which he has a lot of experience with. He also wants at least twice as much money as what appears to be the customary rate. No doubt he would do a good job and would be accountable for any problems, but more than the money, I just do not like his attitude. From a technical standpoint, the Dynavin actually appears easier to install; anyway, his loss.
I have an appointment with the owner of a local family owned stereo shop to discuss the installation of my prefered Dynavin unit later this afternoon. I am a little nervous as he is not a "Porsche" shop per say, but his shop has good reviews and he has been in business for more than 20 years.
As I was asking around about installers, my local Porsche dealer contact told me that they have heard that Porsche "may" be coming out with their own Classic radio replacement for 997's in 2022. Has anyone heard about these "rumors"?
The owner of the stereo shop I went to this afternoon was extremely knowledgeable. He admitted he has had problems installing these after market units; they just are not plug in play as described and always require trouble shooting, sometimes hours and multiple phone calls to the vendors to get these units to work. Even when they work, he has had complaints from clients that the units are "slow" to respond to different functions regarding changing applications, music stations, volume, etc. They generally do not work as well as the manufacturers claim and never as well as the units they are replacing.
He had not heard of Dynavin either. He usually recommends Pioneer units as they seem to work better than the other vendors; interesting that is what the high end Porsche installer said as well.
I think I am back to "square one". Maybe I will just wait and see what Porsche comes out with next year since I do have a 997.1 model. I have heard good things about the Porsche classic radio for the older Porsche models.
I am going to investigate a "temporary solution" with an FM modulator. I remember @ 15 years ago when my kids were just starting to drive I bought them all FM modulator units for their cars so they would have hands free access to their cell phones.
There’s a thread that started a few months ago and it was announced that it is coming to market. I’m going to wait for that and see what the damage is. If it’s anything like the 996 unit I may be waiting a while before that goes in.
Just wanted to throw this out there. My wife’s Escalade has wireless CarPlay. It is awesome but she also has wireless charging.
When I get it the car I like to connect my phone to power source. Without wireless charging I don’t see a huge benefit to wireless CarPlay.
I had installer run my cable to armrest compartment of center console instead of space below AC controls. When I get in I plug in phone and close compartment so I’m not tempted to play with phone (I’ve been the guy looking down when light turns green).
FWIW - I have an alpine unit and no issues with hissing. So far I’m not too bothered by lack of ****. The button only has to be pressed and held. You don’t have to press multiple times to adjust up or down.
