Default Crap! Check engine Light Codes 2308 0353 0303

2009 C2S 174K miles

Crap... man... and I don't have any tools. All in a moving truck.

About 1 mile out from my house, got the check engine light and rough running. I suspect an ignition coil but never saw all these codes before.... and as a bonus, I have surprise C140 Porsche Stability Management code. WTF!

Ignore the 1043 air flap.... I disconnected that little vacuum flap in the air plenum that is on S models.

The C140 Stability Management is an odd one... I saw this the other day when I ran the Durametric test for my AC not blowing cold air..... adding refrigerant helped.... I ignored the code but yet it is still there after clearing them the other day. I had the car shipped last week... maybe related to that event. Crap.

Peace
Bruce in Philly (now Atlanta)

Bruce, it looks like you had that C140 code 7 years ago - http://pedrosboard.com/read.php?7,31263,31291
What cleared it back then. Since it's a communication error could it be stray trons or a low battery?

Have you changed the coil paks and when? Mine let go just recently (93,000 miles) but there was never any codes about misfire etc. A misfire code would have been nice in my situation as it only ran rough when warmed up. Or putting it another way, since you got misfire codes and car runs rough (iginition coil problem 100%) , then it can't be coil problem.
Low battery/old battery will drive you nuts and even worse on the car.
If coils are more than 80,000 miles old, excellent chance that is the problem in spite of the car telling you that. About $50 each from friendly dealer OEM.

This really makes me .... argh!!!

I can replace a coil pack in short order myself.... but my tools are in a truck somewhere in Delaware or somewhere. So... off to a service station... and 10X cost over DIY?????

I never replaced them. Yea, I probably should have as these will go sooner or later, but I really wanted to see how much life I could get out of them. Folks here are so eager to do preventative maintenance... well, I like to chuckle as I am saving. This was a fun gamble when I had my tools and could get myself up and running in an afternoon.... but now.... argh!

So.... when should you replace your coil packs in a 997.2? I guess I should have done it with my 160K plug replacement. Still pretty good. Yea, I know, I am a sample size of one... but hey... 174K miles on original coils is more than luck... I think it is just a higher design threshold for this car than previously required.

Yea, that PASM code..... it comes and goes... no reason that I can find and the system works perfectly.... another oddity of my car.... it never triggered a dash light.

Peace

I have a coil pak sitting on my desk , one of the old ones, not sure if it is bad or not. I also have a great horned owl just outside my door, looking at me , (daily bird story). A true gambler would replace one of your coil paks with a questionable one on the chance that you hit it on the first shot. . Just one bolt. Might get you going till you catch up with your tools. Yes, the coil paks on .2 cars are way better than .1 cars, but still have a life of approx 100K (+/- a lot).
We are wishing you good luck on getting all this sorted out. This stuff just seems to happen at the worst possible time.

Do the simple stuff first. Pull into your local auto parts store and have 'em check the battery. It's usually free. A bad cell can raise holy hell with a computer.

If you are able to stop across the river to South Jersey, I have all the tools you would need. Not sure if you are able to travel.

It sucks that’s it on cylinder 3 ( it’s at the rear left of motor?). The hardest of lol 6 to get at. Have to loosen muffler to get at it. Did all 6 of mine at 50,000 miles as I was throwing transmission O/T codes. No misfire codes. But I’m pretty sure I had some misfires rare and randomly over the past 2 years. At least do all 3 on the one side then the other 3 yourself. It took me about 2 hours for all 6 …R&R wheels off and on, mufflers just loosened completely off xpipe and cats. No need to remove bumper or muffler completely. Extensions and universal joints to get at top cat bolt.

Thanx all for the help! I am in Atlanta now... no tools and will not have any as all are going into storage while I try and buy a new home... may take many months as the prices are nuts.

Update: I had the car towed to an indy..... does German cars... had a few Porsches in the lot and on a rack. I am not worried, changing coil packs should be a no-brainer for any good tech. I asked them to change out all six as I just don't know when I will have my jacks and specialty tools. This is really disappointing as I can do this for just the cost of the parts. So far, just the tow was $200 !!!! Sheesh.

Timing is everything.

Update: A national shortage of coils? WTF? Being overnighted from California... even two local dealers here were out of them.

The fact that most dealers stock these coils show the fact that they do fail . Ask any indy and they will tell you they replace tons of coils, all models. Inventory for so much stuff that comes into the country (German car parts) is stuck on the container ships waiting to unload
In order to help you out, I will see if this guy will deliver some of my used coils for you to try. He is rated as heavy lift and his charge for air freight from here in California is complementary. (refer to reply #5 above)
A little late now, but great words to live by- 'Always keep you guitar and your tools with you, you are gonna need 'em'
We are pullin' for ya!

Air freight coil paks to Bruce . CA to Atlanta
