Talking 997 spotted in Pac Heights

So I'm driving around my hood, on Van Ness around the Pac Heights area, and pull up behind a midnight blue Porsche 911. Notice it has Georgia distributor plates and rectangular tailpipes, and the body looks a little wide. Taillights are a bit thin top to bottom. I think to myself "Naw, couldn't be the new 997 could it?"

So I go around him on the left and get in front of him. The front is taped up to look post-2002 996ish like you see in all the spy photos, but you could make out the 993ish rings, and the separate fog lights/turnsignals in the bumper. I move around to his right side to look inside and got a look at his steering wheel, which was more rectangular/robotic, a bit like an Infiniti. Has old school pull doorhandles rather than flaps, and definitely a wider body than normal Carreras. Gave him a thumbsup. As the light turned green he took off. Exhaust sound was better than the vacuumcleaner-like 996, but not as throaty as the 993.

Somebody should plot a map of 997 sightings. I bet he's on his way to Portland by now. Northbound on Van Ness (which is highway 101 for those of you not familiar with San Francisco)?

He was going southbound. He had an antenna on the back and the rear spoiler looks just like the spy photos, with fewer, but larger scalloped louvers. He also had what looked like a radar detector inside.

Default 997 sighting

I spotted the same car or clone thereof on friday 4/2. The driver was getting on the 101 north near Pismo Beach. I tried to change lanes and follow him but I got cut off before the onramp. Most obvious feature: rear flaired fenders. (though at first thinking it was a C-4S) The headlight disguise was quite good, though to a Porsche person, it only loosly resembled the 996. I only got a glance moving by but it seemed the forward edge of the front fender appeared a slight bit more vertical. To accomodate the new round headlights possibly? The Georgia distributor plates were a strong clue. Also no Carrera or 911 ID script on the rear.

A couple weeks ago friends of mine saw a "convoy" of Porsches (Cayennes, 911's and Boxsters) going throught the MidWest. There were at least 20-30 travelling on the interstate all in a row. All had large antennas and varying degrees of "tape jobs" here and there, were really dirty, had no external markings, and had a driver and passenger in each. Unfortunately, noone had any cameras at the time to see if they were the new models, but it certainly sounds suspicious! Would have made an awesome picture!

They were spotted by different friends in different parts of the state. They think most of them were Cayennes, and they were all black or dark colored (or really, really dirty).
