Default engine cleaning question

I want to get rid of some dust inside the engine bay, but I don't have access to an air compressor, and have limited knowledge of cleaning the engine and plastics inside. I can reach some items, but just wondering if there is a gentle method to doing this, not really wanting to "stick a hose" in their kind of scenario.

I use Armor All Tire Foam, Simple Green or Windex. After spraying I use a variety of brushes to add the mechanical force to the dirt removal process. Long handled baby bottle brush is the best - especially on the "crab claw wheels'. A 2 - 3" paint brush is good for more accessible areas. Light spray rinse with water to follow. I follow the precaution not to use too much water force.
