I use the Griot's engine cleaner and Meguiars D4510 plastic coating. It's good to clean the engine frequently to help reduce grease and grime from building up.
engine cold, spray simple green everywhere and let it sit for a few mins. Spray that bad boy down with real low pressure water and then Fire it up and go for a good drive to dry/steam it out/clean.
Just use good ole Google and type in; detail Porsche engine. Quite a few links to check out. Doesn't hurt to get several opinions. I like the tech articles on Pelican's web site.

works every time.
+1 !!
Rob gave me this advice last year.... I have done it to my engine maybe five times now and WOW... it works. I take it a step further and use a wheel detailing tool..... a foot-long stick with long shaggies and start jamming it in there... after I spray the simple green.... just jam that thing anywhere you can get it.
My buddy, a lifelong Ford employee... said not to worry about this procedure as engine bays are designed to take some water. All the electrical connections have hoods. And, the bay will only be wet for maybe 15 minutes or so and evaporates out shortly after you fire up the engine.

Thanks guys this is great info. I got some simple green. It says you can use it full strength or dilute 1/10 or 1/30. What would you recommend? Also do I need to cover anything in the engine before spraying?

Rob (RTL) recommended about 25% Simple Green..... and it works fabulously. Really no need for higher concentration. Nothing to cover, however I made two small plates from a plastic box lid that I tape over the intake holes on the airbox (997.2). Why soak the paper filters? They get wet anyway when you wash the car as water comes in through the air vents on the rear trunk lid. An odd design, but whatever.
I don't worry about the alternator... I just hit it with Simple Green and hit with the sprinkle from the garden hose.
I also squirt the underside of the trunk lid. Raise the spoiler first and you get all those nasty hard to reach spots.... again, I use a wheel cleaning tool and stab away at all those odd parts. So, you may want to consider cleaning your engine at a different time than washing your car as you will get spray all over the backend of you car.... at least I make a mess of it.
BTW, I do this all very quickly.... I don't turn this into a fine detailing exercise. I take my car into very very dusty environments and the engine becomes just a horrible dirty mess. Before I go into a nature reserve or whatever, I jam foam air filters into the intake tubes..... but that is a story for another day.

One of the worst long term reliability experiences I had with a car was due to engine bay cleaning. That car was a POS but I still will not do it again. Dust doesn't hurt it, and there isn't any oil or grease. The mechanic can deal with dirty gloves AFAIC.
