Reading a bit of the recommended posts i see a few areas where $ figures diverge:

1) parts

2) what to do with the bottom end, liners etc

3) engine break-in (more parts)

Also, this is slightly off topic, but what is/has been porsche’s response to the high rebuild cost associated with their products? (laughing all the way to the bank..)

Here are comments by Hartech in 2007 regarding 996:

These engines have problems with cracked heads and cylinders, cylinders going oval until the piston clearance is too great, intermediate shaft bearing failure, chain breakage, big end and main bearing failure, RMS leaks, etc - most of which can be improved or completely cured by modifying the weak area or cause - during the rebuild - rendering the finished engine more likely to be more reliable than the original.

Thanks for helping me sort through this, i think this is enough info to assume large pricing differences are possible.. and if Mr Raby ever reads this i hope no disrespect is felt.

Hang in there and do your research. Your questions IMHO offered no disrespect. You simply unwittingly opened a potentially hot topic!!! How long have you had your car? What year is it? What are your aspirations? And your background? Just curious.

Thank you. Well lets see: ive had 5 porsche, 68, 73, 86, 02, 03 turbo... the 73 had s pistons(NEVER should have sold).. 03 turbo had Gemballa 650 upgrade.. And im happy to say i just put a deposit on a 69 shell.. ive restored many types of classic cars and have a background in math and computers...

all the 911 ive had were long ago.. so this will be a new approach for me, understanding the car through vehicle dynamics and rigorous testing and design in my 3D dynamics software, building, designing, and fabricating
suspension for a street/track car

was going to do the project with a 997 is why im here in this thread etc

Welcome aboard. It sounds like you've got a great wealth of experience. That puts this entire thread in context.

I look forward to your impressions and progress. Post pics when you have the chance.

My GT3 motor took ~ $25k in parts, I can't understand why these motors would even be close

Sorry all, I misunderstood, the $55k Raby motor is a whole nuther beast!

55K is my price for an R43/ R44 engine, weighing it at 4.3/4.4L, currently making up to 492HP at the crankshaft, on pump gas, all in below 7,300RPM.
This is more than double the cost of most of my other non R-Series engines.

492 horsepower with no forced induction, that's incredible Jake.
