Default I Cheaped Out But Still Won

Well tomorrow I will be the owner of a 911, my first Porsche. Owning a 911 has been a life long dream of mine. I feel like I did before my wedding, actually better because I had the flu when I got married.
After deciding I wanted a 911 and doing some research I started looking for the perfect 991.1 or 991.2. But I swear to God every time one that I liked hit the market the price went up $5k or it had an accident or something else was wrong.
$15k-$20k of my down payment has evaporated in the last 6-9 months. It was very frustrating but I was determined to wait for the right car to come along.

Meanwhile I had been working with my local Porsche dealer. The used car manager was sending me cars that came in. Sometimes it would be things he knew I didn't want (718 GTS) or couldn't afford (964 Turbo). But last Friday he sent me something I wasn't even considering, a 997.1 base Cab 6-speed. It was older than I wanted, it had more mileage than I wanted, but it looked nice. 1 owner, always maintained at a Porsche dealer, recent service, new tires. This was a well loved car.

So I left work a little early to go look at it. It was optioned well with with a PSE, Bose, 19" wheels, etc. I took it out for a ride and fell in love. It's not a fast car by any means but it's not a slow car either. It's an engaging car. It makes the right sounds, has the right responses. You feel involved. It's a true drivers car. It was tight, no slop whatsoever so I did something I've never done before. I told the salesmen I'd take it.
The car is not without flaw. There is a rock chip on the hood, a small >1" scratch on the rear bumperette, a spot on the roof, and the PPF has done it's job but is ready to be retired. All of which the dealer said they will take care of.

The wife got a little upset because I didn't wait for her, but it is better to ask forgiveness than ask permission. The good news is it only cost about half of my budget and I saved half my down payment which I'll use for any unforeseen maintenance.
I did not get a PPI due to the service records and we'll see if that was a mistake. If it blows up I guess I'll learn about hot rodding M96/05 engines. But lets hope not.

I plan to drive it like it's meant to be driven and take it on road trips. It's past that point of being low mileage nor is it a collector car. Which is a bit of relief. I also want to do my own maintenance. Wrenching on cars is therapy for me. I have a nice garage with a lift and a decent set of tools.

I was tired of watching my down payment that took years to save (hide from the wife) disappear due to the inflationary market. I figured this is a good spot to park my money for a few years until thing calm down. I figure worse case scenario the market recedes and I lose $10k plus my maintenance. Best case it continues to go up and I sell it for what I paid minus any maintenance. Either way I get to enjoy a pretty sweet car in the meantime. Wish me luck.

Congrats! A 6MT cab with PSE is pretty cool and should hold its value well. I track my car so a cab was not very feasible, but I fondly remember the BMW and Audi cabs I had previously.
Btw, a low mileage C2S 6MT cab just sold on BAT for more than $50K...(see BAT thread).
But money is not why we buy and drive these cars, as you point out! Enjoy!

This post means absolutely nothing to me without a picture.

Congrats! I feel the same way when I get into my 997.1 S coupe. It's not fast, not slow and not filled with the latest tech. However, it just feels right, still smells new and still feels tight (given I only have 24K miles on it)

Let's see this thing! Enjoy the ride!

I'll post pics once I actually pick it up. I don't want to post them beforehand, it's like seeing the bride before the wedding. Geez second corny wedding analogy in the post.

I'm new to this forum but should I start a "which oil should I use" and a "what kind of air should I put in my tires thread" ?

Congrats. I’ve owned my ‘09 CS2 cab for a couple years and I drive it. I bought it to drive it. I’ve put about 9,000 miles it. I didn’t even give a thought about depreciation because it’s a toy. Drive it like it should be driven and enjoy it. Take some long road trips and you’ll love it even more.

Congrats! Can’t wait for pics so we can criticize the orange side markers, kind of air in your tires, and various other meaningless items . Glad you saved down payment $$, gives you car tinkering/mod cash. Based on experience to save your marriage or at least bedtime fun I have one piece of advice. When you walk into garage with wife and look at car and say “I love you” and your wife says I love you too, don’t say I was talking to my 911. Automatic months of sandwiches for dinner and bedtime fun penalty.

Driven DT40 and Nitrogen.

Just kidding and congrats. They're wonderful cars and a base with PSE and Bose is pretty uncommon. Does it also have the full leather option or PASM?

Looking forward to the pics.

I don't know if it has the full leather or PASM. It has a button for PSM.

They all have PSM, that's the stability magaemnrt. PASM would have a button that looks like it has a shock absorber on it. Would be rare in a base model car, but do is PSE, so thought you might get lucky. PASM has a lower ride height from the factory and also let's yiu add TPC's DSC controller to make the suspension fully active based on g-forces (very cool stuff).

Full leather gives you leather door tops, dash top, and console side panels instead of bumpy plastic in those upper areas.

I believe it does have full leather. These are pics from when it was traded pre detail.

I’m in the same boat as you! Picking up my 997.2 with a MT Sunday! Was looking for a .1s but the market has gone bananas for those too. Once I found a .2 MT black on black I jumped on it. Little higher miles than I wanted but now I won’t care when I drive the crap out of it. It’s my first 911 as well. I’ll be posting pics Sunday! Enjoy!
