Default 72k and shocks should be replaced...what has been your experience with aftermarket?

2006 C2S with 72k miles, with quarantine my car has shifted priorities to primarily being driven during weekends on back roads/canyon carving and I just started taking it to the track. Spent a day at Laguna Seca & Thunderhill and I'm already scheduled to go back to Laguna in a couple of weeks!

My car is all stock but with the recent discovery of track days I'm starting to consider aftermarket options - specifically shocks since mine are worn and should be replaced.

I wanted to hear your experience with running an aftermarket shock setup and how or if it affected your daily driving?

Also wanted to confirm - if I want to retain the use of my PASM button (normal/sport suspension) my only option is to go with the OEM shocks? Or would other Bilstein model shocks work?

Get Bilstein B16 Damptronics to keep the PASM functionality and add the TPC DSC controller, especially since you're using the car in a more spirited fashion. You'll love it.

I believe there may be two versions of B16s. You want the B16 Damptronics for PASM capability. I have them on my car along with a bunch of other RSS suspension pieces and the TPC DSC Controller.

Ignore the top mount setup. They're Tarett monoballs with a cargraphic Noselift kit.

I was told by Bilstein that using B16 would lower my car. I already have slight driveway issues and did not want to make them worse. They suggested B6 to maintain height and slightly improve ride.

The B16s are fully adjustable. Most people run them in the lower settings. Because of my noselift, I have my fronts almost.all the way down, but it's not very low. My bumper.is also deeper than stock. Look at the tire to fender gap for reference instead of the height of the bumper.

I had thought the b16 was a good upgrade that could be set to OEM height. I was surprised when Bilstein told me not to buy them because they were designed to lower the car.

In my picture of the front strut, if you zoom in, you can see how much thread height is on that adjuster to lift the car. I could create a "Carolina Squat" 997 if I wanted too LOL. (Absolutely hate that pickup trend though).

Turns out all Bilstein shocks for 997's are backordered and out of stock. I called up Sharkwerks and they aren't able to get the Bilstein B16 Damtronics nor OEM Bilstein B6 shocks. They said this has been an issue with Bilstein for years.

Kind of not sure what to do here - I guess I have to resort to finding a coilover kit and canceling the PASM?

After doing some researching and digging here it seems the Ohlins Road & Track is the ideal substitute if I want a compliant ride on the streets with occasional track work?

Default So, how’d it go?

I was just following your thread I’m in a similar situation with my C2S.
So what happened, what did you go with and how have they done for you?

Went with the Ohlins R&T and couldn’t be happier. Shortly afterwards I added GT3 lower control arms and got a proper track alignment. I also drive around on Nankang AR-1 r compound tires so performance is the priority for me.

How do you like the AR-1 on the street?

They are extremely loud. Think 4x4 tires. The tread pattern creates a resonance and above 70mph there’s a vibration in the steering wheel and pedals. I only drive my car to the track but even still, that can be a 2 hour drive and it might give me a headache. We will see.

I’m running the car at Sonoma tomorrow so the performance I should get might make it worth it, but so far I slightly regret not getting the Nankang CR-1 which is a 200TW and tread pattern similar to a Cup2 or other street tire.

Thanks! I had a feeling that they were too aggressive for street use. I’m sure they are excellent on track. I haven’t looked into the CR-1 tire before. I’ve considered the Goodyear Supercar 3 or 3R but don’t have to pull the trigger yet so just researching for now. The CR-1 looks like it might be a good fit for split use.

So how did the AR-1’s do at Sonoma? I’m thinking the AR-1 may be my next set of track tires.
