Congrats and what a great find! Re. the stiff clutch pedal, I experienced something similar on my 996. The pedal was quite stiff and I had the shop that did the PPI replace the slave cylinder. Helped slightly but still stiff. During an evening rip I felt a crunch under the pedal and the helper spring module fell out. The spring was in 3 pieces and during the shift the housing sat crooked and ended up breaking and falling out. Once I installed a new unit the clutch got much better and closer to normal. Somewhat ironically, the clutch started slipping quite badly a few weeks later and I ended up getting a new clutch and flywheel
Congrats. Way better than the 996 Turbo from a looks perspective. It's doubtful those maintenance tricks are going to solve a stiff pedal and crunching sound from a clutch, but if the car is as clean and fresh as you describe, then investing in a new clutch isn't the worst thing.
The hunt is fun, but not nearly as fun as driving one. I'm amazed by how many people walk away from a good car they're interested in over a couple grand and then spend the next 6 months trying to find it when they could have been driving and enjoying the other one.
My understanding is that the clutch is self adjusting on the 997 S cars and as it keeps wearing and adjusting the pedal keeps getting stiffer. I started feeling this on my -06 C4S at around 50K miles just before I traded it. Still worked just fine. No slipping or any other issues but the increased stiffness was definitely noticeable. The Porsche dealership where I traded it drove the car and made note of the stiff clutch but to their credit they didn't make a big deal out of it. "Needs a new clutch soon so how about if we take $500 off the trade in price?". I was fine with that.
