Tires Question/Toughts
Folks,
My 06 997S Cab has Michelin's on it currently -- the front two are getting pretty close to needing replacement (4/32) and the rears still OK (7/32), all have late 2016/early 2017 DOT manufacture dates. One problem is the front two are slightly mismatched, one is a Pilot Sport PS2 and the other three are regular Pilot Super Sports -- my guess is the previous owner damaged one, visited the local NTB and grabbed whatever they had (or was misled and told they're the same). It causes a very, very slight shimmy at high speeds, even after an alignment, due to the different tread pattern. Mildly noticeable.
Question is this: do I replace the front two with proper/matching Pilot Super Sports (~$650) or replace all four with something slightly more affordable (General G-Max) for ~$900 and put the funds elsewhere? I dislike tossing anything that has usable life in it (the rears in this case) but don't want to regularly play the catch-up game either. I live and drive in a city so tire damage is regrettably common (thanks potholes on all cars), never track the car etc. so I'm OK with the Generals have read lots of solid reviews about them. I also do maybe 5K miles/year max.
Always welcome folks' experiences and thoughts.
Thanks!

I would put 2 new PS4S on the front. They are the replacements for the Super Sports and amazing tires. Then when the rears are ready put PS4S on the back.

the rears wear twice as fast as the fronts. I would also bet that if you crawl under and look at the inner tread on the rears, you'll find that they may be closer to needing replacement that your reading. If so, replace all 4 with matching tires. preferably MPS4s. I just put those on and absolutely love them. never tried the Generals. Bridgestone S4s are another good option.

Buy 4 of something. Put the rears on Craigslist. Someone will buy them to do donuts.
My personal choice for a tire on my 997 and my 928 is Nitto Invo.

Buy a set of four Michelins. All four should be the same tire for many reasons. I used to analyze tires to death... but I came to the conclusion years ago that you really can't beat a Michelin product for all around goodness (dry/wet traction, noise, longevity).... so I save myself wasted hours and potential disappointment and buy Michelin. Write the check, move on.
