Hi,
I have a 2006 Porsche 911 997.1 with 35,000 miles that, of course, has the IMS bearing. It has not been a problem to date. I'm thinking of keeping the car for the long term and making some performance enhancements to it and am thinking that now might be a good time to have the LN Engineering IMS fix + a new clutch done. While the car doesn't need a new clutch at the present time, I have heard that it is much less expensive to do the two at the same time. I would appreciate some good advice and if anybody knows of a great mechanic / shop within an hour of two of the DC area, that would be wonderful.
Many thanks
Andy

Someone can correct me if I’m wrong but I think the only 997 that you can easily replace the IMS is on the 2005 model which has the smaller bearing. Starting from 06 to 08, Porsche put in a larger and stronger bearing which was much less prone to failure. In order to change out the larger bearing, they’d have to split the engine case to swap it out. You’re probably better off just removing the rubber seal so that splash oil from the engine gets to it, and leaving it at that.

2006 model larger bearing - Leave it alone and don't worry about it.

Your 2006 is in the 1% group. If you still want to do it, there are a number of quality independent Porsche shops in our area and I recommend reaching out to IMS solutions for the contact info of one of their trained/preferred installers:

He's talking about replacing the IMS bearing, not the Intermediate Shaft itself. Carreralicious' information is correct. OP, don't do anything on your 06 until you need a new clutch, then remove the outer grease seal from the IMS bearing and leave the bearing installed.

My understanding IMS bearing failure for 06 plus is low. I would not concern it but bore scoring is more of concern (I mean I had seen more people post about their cases). However many Porsche specialty shops all told me don’t worry about those “known issue” from internet because they hardly see one. Just enjoy the car.
