Rebuilding a 997.1 Engine, Start to Finish
Hi All, I wanted to follow up on my original post (Hide the children, I scoped cylinder 6... [NSFW unless you work in a machine shop])
Thanks for all the support fellas!
It has been a little over a year since I decided to rebuild the engine myself. I figured if any of you were curious what that looks like or were thinking of doing it too, well, I filmed the entire thing. I'm still slogging through the hours of footage but a good deal of it is up.
I was hoping it helps anyone that might find themselves in the same spot. Or you can laugh at my boneheaded mistakes. I leave those in, so you don't have to make them too. Anyway, I got a lot out of these forums and wanted to say thanks!!

What you'll find there
- The entire process of dropping the engine
- Disassembly
- Sending it off to LNEngineering to get Nickies and a 4.0 bore
- Reassembly and Timing
- New clutch
- New Exhaust (Fabspeed)
- First start and drive
- All the dumb stuff I did wrong (I've build engines but never a Porsche, they are a special animal)

I'm a few miles and a couple years ahead of you on this journey. I've got 3k miles on my home brew rebuilt in Glastonbury. Congrats on the success! I'll be poking through your vids.

Found your videos a while back, but didn't watch the entire thing. I'll have to follow your channel.

Great job, I too am a 'dad.1' as I put it..esp big props getting that much work done with kids. (mine are still toddlers). I subbed earlier. Hope to watch a good amt of your content while the wifes working the next few days. Wish I was this skilled as it fascinates me and would be awesome to do. Wife doesn't even trust me to do the oil change on the car (she does all the wrenching on stuff). Rightfully so I suppose since I tightened the hell out of the drain bolt on my cruze one time wondering why it wouldnt come loose. 'damn left handed people, you dumb @**' something along those lines as she broke it loose finally.

@Chipso4 just wanted to say that I appreciate everything about this. As a Porsche owner, dad and self made developer I fancy my self as an engineer of all things.
Your plight is one that all of us fear. I bought from the PO of my 08 C4s. The day i took delivery the CEL came on. I made the mistake of not pumping the breaks. It ended up being the secondary air injector pump. I’m sure you know now that part is nearly impossible to reach with out dropping the motor. Like you i was compelled to do the right thing. So down goes the motor and while it was out i replaced every part i could. It was definitely not the start to ownership i had envisioned but it was a reality check.
I did have a local Indy specialist do my work. I was in a position to be able to cover the cost and not in a position to tear it apart and have it sit. I’ll definitely watch a bunch of your videos as my curious on all sorts of things I’m sure you encountered.

Thanks for the great support I've always found here!
@TopKatz Yea the Secondary air pump actually confused me. It's got spaghetti wires and tubes. I had to look up what it even does and found out it's mostly an emissions thing (I think). I wonder if I could just remove it. I'm not sure which is more of a pain the AC compressor or the power steering pump. I also learned you can drop the motor down like 3-4" without needing to disconnect anything (aside from 2 bolts).
@4Driver4 I wish I had known! I would have loved to commiserate. Awesome work and I'm pretty glad to hear I wasn't the only dumba$$ that attempted this.
Welp back to editing. Hopefully, I'll get the rest up soon.

Well thanks to youtube algorithm's, 997Dad's videos popped up on my YT page. I managed to watch most of this guys' videos. Fast forwarded through a lot of it, but I definitely have to say congrats on taking the dive especially since you're not actually a mechanic, neither am I. However, the last video in this series was over a year ago and it doesn't appear that you've done any updates on this forum either? Anyway, thought I would revive the thread to see if you were still active or did you find 997 bliss after your repair and never looked back? Hope it's the latter.
