I have put together a comprehensive PDF on my installation of a Sony XAV-AX5000 into my 2006 997.1 C4S with factory Bose amp and sub, including removing the DVD drive for navigation, and back up camera installation. The document is built heavily on the knowledge and discussion in this thread here:
...but I've tried to consolidate everything I learned into one place. It's rather wordy, but that comes with the territory of being comprehensive. If anyone manages to read through the whole thing, I hope you enjoy doing so!
Single vs dual input fakra antenna adaptor: I'm guessing that the dual is needed if you have Navi on the OEM PCM, which I don't. Does anyone know if the single cable is sufficient for PCM without factory Navi?
Canbus decoder. I'm assuming that is mainly for steering wheel controls, which I also don't have. Can anyone confirm or deny the need for a canbus decoder?
So far, I've got a Sony Xav-AX3250, fascia kit, metra 70-1784 wiring harness, MOST decoder, fakra adapter cable, and a back up camera. Hopefully I've got everything.
Great job! Loved you found a “deal” and got everything you wanted. Also, as someone who’s taken everything apart, I love how you chronicled your work for others to follow. Sweet!
Thanks @Saaboteur major kudos to you for this writeup. I was using many sources and hit a wall midway through, your guide helped me realize the afterthought that some OEM wires are not standard electrical coloring on my 997.1 Non-Bose system
For future installers, my Metra kit came with a couple extra wires and one happened to be blue, so I was able to insert that pin in the Metra harness and connect Plug A Pin 5 Antenna to the power antenna wire on the head unit.
The wiring diagram of the MOST box is also excellent - no other resource reliably explained how to power the MOST box correctly through the blue/white power control wire.
However, the speakers currently have NO bass. Mids and Highs are crisp but I can't figure out how to adjust the EQ to get the Lows back, seems to be a common issue.
All in all, the install took 4 hours much of which was spent troubleshooting; I'm very happy so far with my Kenwood DMX9707S (hard to find a newer unit with hard buttions)
Think I finally figured out the bass issue, because all of my speakers were turning on whether from the head unit or the ASP amp, and I needed to adjust the EQ as well as a few other Kenwood settings (loudness, realizer, space enhancer).
All in all it sounds much better, although still nowhere near acceptable audiophile quality but that's not what I bought the car for...
