I have a cracked case on my Key 1, so I swapped just the shell with the Key 2 and my car was not happy with that, so since there is clearly some electronics in the blade and the case, keying my own car is beyond me. The cheapest high quality OEM option I have found is to find the 997.2 keys for as cheap as possible and then just pay the dealer to code them. I think at some point, I will just bite the bullet and go order everything through a dealer and just have them code it as well. Right now, I just use Key 2 but the second something goes wrong with that FOB at all, I assume it will be as @anewman says...straight to the stealership. 😢

Dealership is the only option I know of. I think you need PIWIS to code.

There's an immobilizer chip in each key that's matched with the circuit board. Swapping the PCB without swapping the immobilizer will cause the car to recognize key 1 on unlock with the remote and then key 2 when you insert the key. You can swap the chips but sometimes you'll end up destroying the case as well. Alternatively, you can buy replacement shells on the cheap to replace the broken shell on Key 1. They're not OEM but they're good enough and it'll prevent any weirdness for having different memory settings associated with each key.
