Default Suspension Guide?

I’ve got a strut rattle - could be coffin arms, bump stop, upper strut mount, could be lots of things.

So usually in this situation I just replace everything. The problem is I don’t know what a bad bushing looks like etc. I’ve never done suspension work.

Is there a guide anywhere that teaches how to diagnose suspension components?

If not, I’m gonna reach out to an indy and ask him if I can pay for a lesson and if he’ll teach me as he examines my suspension. Apparently he’s a really nice guy that just works out of his garage. So there’s a small chance he’ll say yes lol

As a start you might want to check out Elephant Racing's suspension navigator:

https://www.elephantracing.com/996-997-suspension-navigator/

It shows their aftermarket parts on the 997 so it won't look exactly your car looks now but you'll get the idea. Not a lot of info on the symptoms of bad parts but there's some. Good luck.

I am in the same boat on my 09; I've got low speed squeaks, and clunking noises which occur under certain types of conditions only.
Some I've narrowed down to shocks/strut mounts, others are bit of bushing play along with rubber consistency.

Ultimately its a 11 year old car now with 70K km, some suspension pieces were replaced few years ago, but it doesn't take much to cause a failure with the roads and winter driving.

What I did and recommend :
1- Visual check for any cracks / overall look of the rubber
2 - Pry bar check for movement in ball joints and other places
3 - Removal and testing
4 - Overall tightness of hardware and making sure

Quick Video that may help (991 + 996 shares alot of components / design and geometry with 997):
991 - how to check some bushings

Check out Meyle, decently priced and good quality:

I would look if everything is torque to spec too. I had the bolt that link the trailing arms to the lower control arm not loose but not tight enough that made noise. Mecanics often goes by feeling on big suspension bolt and it's rare that your feeling make you reach the 118 pound this one require. The one from the control arm to the subframe is like 86. And the manual spec that whitout antiseize.
