Default C4S axle diy advice.

Long story short, when doing some work investigating a washer fluid leak, as I was putting my wheel back on I noticed a good bit of grease inside the rim. Felt my cv boot and it’s gashed. I am pretty sure it happened sometime in the last 500 miles, but I don’t know. When I pulled my hand out, the grease was black and gritty.

the question is will it be ok to rebuild if everything looks fine once cleaned up, or do I need to buy a whole new axle? Price wise it’s about $650 more, and due to the cathartic nature, I’m inclined to rebuild it. After a few specialty tools it’s probably more like $400 difference. What am I looking for to determine if I can get away with just replacing the boots once I have the axle out?

thanks in advance for the advice.

South main auto YouTube channel has 34 minute video on how to rebuild and repack an axle. Sorry. Can't figure out how to link. My phone goes straight to YouTube.

Insomnia tonight. I never updated this job. I decided to pull both axles while I had the car on the lift, and when jiggling the passenger side axle out of the wheel carrier I had a real scare. The entire differential half shaft popped out of the diff. Scared the hell out of me, but after some reading I learned that they can indeed pop out, and is necessary to pop out when replacing the seals. Just a funny but scary incident.

sigh

You're a brave soul to tackle the axles. When I PPI'd, my C4S, I was informed I needed to rebuild my front ones. Having performed a multitude of DIYs on the Audi and BMW side, I finally caved in and let my Indy shop perform the work. It's not easy and requires a few specialized tools like you mentioned. Plus...working with grease sprayed all over your axles, shock-body, wheel well, etc, is never a fun task. Cheers and well done!
