Outer CV joint boot leaking
#17
I managed to squeeze them as far as they go using needle nose vice grips, but for the life of me I could not hook the locking part with the limited space in the wheel well. If you look at the pictures in the "not done yet" post, you might be able to make out the difference.

ha! Speaking of DIY... today I tried to fix something broken on my car that is super small but annoying (and must happen to all these cars): broken underbody stud for holding the splash guards.
It didn't quite work (yet).
version 1:
nut, converted to nut-bolt

You are correct (August) but the PPI in fact caught the a cracked CV boot and the boot replaced prior to purchase. The clamp they put on was a little loose, so hence the grease slipping out of the boot. Not a big deal really once I figured it out. Unless you are referring to the broken stud holding the underbody splash guard, which I managed to snap off myself.

What is wrong with a common Jubilee clamp (screw down)? No new tools needed. I get wanting to use what the factory used, but many times a mass-maker uses what it fastest for assembly and not what is best or more convenient for a DIYer.

I'd be worried that all of those slots would damage the rubber boot over time (ever notice the indentations they leave).
On another note I won't use a screw down clamp (like that pictured) on stainless braided lines since I worry that the braid could be damaged as the clamp is tightened.

As an aside, I am sure a plastic zip tie would work for a quick fix and would probably last for weeks or months. I am not sure how secure metal zip ties are long term, but those also crossed my mind as well. At the end of the day, the grease cleanup is far more work than the clamping.

The clamp doesn't seem bad, screw it down then hit one of the slots with a center punch slightly just enough to deform it, it shouldn't come lose at all. Does anyone make any kind of uhmw shaft collars? Some of that plastic gets really strong. I'm sure stainless would be fine too.
Good I'm glad they caught that at the PPI. I was thinking how could a boot be that far gone and the shop just checked it 3 months ago. Hope alls well with the new ride.
