If you came from the Aircooled era, you'd be very happy not having to use oil dipstick.
Many Aircooled Porsche's required checking oil while car was idling and slopping oil up and down dipstick making it annoying and hard to read.
Electronic readout much more accurate and less sloppy.

Besides, adding oil to the 997 is so infrequent and my/our 997's oil level is almost always at the high bar

Agreed.
I'm just grateful my air-cooled also doesn't use any oil.
So much easier to check electronically.
