Can someone please tell me how to remove the inner joint from the CV shaft? See photos. Also, does the inner bronze lid come off of the joint (the outer obviously does). And one last question, when I am repacking the grease into the bearing, am I supposed to fill the boot with grease also? Thanks for any in put!
The inner bronze lid does come off. Remove it and you should be able to take everything off the shaft, even the spherical member as it appears you have removed the cir-clip. if the spherical member does not want to move with hand pressure, you may need to motivate it to move with a gear puller.
Go to 10m20s for that part regarding the shaft joint separation.
You only repack the bearing, not the boot. The boot does not keep the grease in, it keeps the elements out. 100 grams per the parts sheet. Not a bad way to do it:
Thank you for directions. I am very grateful! In response to what symptoms I had that initiated the boot replacements; I began several months ago with the intention of flushing the brake fluid since it was due. After I began, I decided to paint and rebuild all calipers. Once completed, the project turned into a total suspension replacement (due to several ball joints that were visibly worn) with all new parts, including all wishbones, trac rods,control arms, new nuts bolts, Bilstein C6's , Eibach Springs, rotors, pads, brake lines, speed sensors, new tires, painted rims, wheel bearings, front differential seals and HushMat sound deadening pads (just a portion of parts). It is an exhausting and time consuming project due to the many unplanned and unforeseen requirements including sourcing parts, obtaining necessary tools and researching forums and YouTube for insight on how to pull it all together. As soon as I wrap things up, I will have it transported to an alignment shop to complete the suspension and to confirm all of the proper torques. I really look forward to driving my 997 again! Start thinking about where you want the alignment to end up, especially the rears. The alignment numbers each have a range and for our rear inner side tires, one end of the range will wear the tires faster and the opposite end of the range not so fast. We tour with our car and have it setup up at the end of the numbers for tire longevity.
She will drive amazing with refreshed suspension components! You are almost there.
Thought you might like to see what the result was of what I asked my dealer to do for the minimum rear tire wear setting, "Touring". They had no issue with doing it but said that what they won't do is go outside the bounds of the ranges for each spec. I was good with that for the sake of safety.
New MPSS were installed at 13k miles and I am at 39k miles and the rears inner edge are officially done and tires need to be replaced...but I will be installing new all four corners. Michelin does not make the MPSS anymore. Not complainging. I got 26k miles out of the rears and the fronts could go much further.
