Default 997.2 erratic oil temp

While driving my car I noticed that the oil temp would only get up to about 170deg vs the usual rock solid 195deg. After a few minutes the temp started to drop back down to around 150 then back and forth a few times ( it would even vary depending on how hard I was cornering ), then I get the message of check oil levels! I pulled over and the digital gauge showed the oil was overfilled which I knew was highly unlikely. I had two quarts of oil removed and the gauge still showed the oil being overfilled so I knew it was a faulty sensor. There is one sensor in the 997.2 ( non turbo & non GT3 cars ) that reads both oil temp and the oil level and the best part is that it was only around $80 for the sensor! I figured I would post this as when I was searching for this subject a few people had the same experiences but never posted what they found to be the issue or fix and some even said that it started working normally again after a few weeks of driving which I was not going to risk. Happy driving 997ers.

Where is the sensor, is it easy to access?

Nice. That would make someone think they were going crazy.

Part number is 948 606 150 00, a combination level/temperature sensor. It's located on bottom of the oil pan. To replace it you'll be draining the oil.

Swingwing is dead on! I did not take any pics but it is located on the bottom of the oil pan and easy to get too.

I’ve noticed my temperature moving around sometimes, for $80 I’ll just replace it. I’ll wait for my next oil change. Do I need to remove the pan?

Nope. Sensor inserts into the oil pan and is fastened by three pan head screws. ECS Tuning has good picture of the part. FCP Euro has best price on the Genuine Porsche part (made by Hella). Save money and buy the Hella part from Pelican Parts for $72.25.
