Default Do you ever replace oil filter between oil changes? 997.2

Hello, newer member here doing a lot of reading of the manual and threads, since the oil filter is so easily changed do you ever change it between oil changes??

For instance if you change your own oil every 5k miles, would you change the filter at 2500 miles??

I haven't done mine yet but looks like it would only take a few minutes???

Thank you....

If you do so you would be assuming a new filter works better than the old one. If you are doing the changes as scheduled I don’t think that a new one would work any better than the old one. In the 70’s I remember not changing the filter with every oil change because we were changing the oil after around a thousand miles.

You’ll need to drain some oil first

I haven't changed my oil yet but the filter looks similar to a Wrangler I had with the filter on top of the engine. Subarus are like this too....on a 997.2 do you lose any oil when you change the filter?
Thank you!

It seems like a bit of a crazy thing to do. If you're changing your oil at 5k miles, changing the filter even more would not serve much purpose.

Limit? Never!! I just thought if it took minutes to replace without having to worry about a mess it couldn't hurt anything?

Not on a 997.2. The oil filter is on top of the engine and automatically drains back into the motor, but that was my first thought too..

Regardless, Changing filter every 2500 seems excessive... UNLESS you just went racing. That's the only reason I would change my oil early, because it is recommended to change oil before and after a weekend of racing. The high temps and high rpms of racing can break down oil faster so it makes sense, but in general, Porsche already recommends changing oil every 10,000 miles... So most of us OCD types are already way ahead of the curve changing oil and filter every 5k miles.

Here is a better thought. Top quality oil filters are made to go 7500 -15000 miles. One could argue changing your filter every other oil change especially if changing oil every 6 months like some say to do, moreso for those that hardly drive, like 3-5 k miles a year.

Nope. It's the oil that wears out at 5,000 miles, not the filter. The only reason the filter would need early replacement is if it's getting clogged up and restricting oil flow, but the only thing that would do that in 2,500 miles would be major engine debris and then you wouldn't have to worry about doing that again. No benefit.

You could change the filter without changing the oil. Synthetic oils can be used for a long time and once the impurities have been removed (with the change of filter), it will work fine for a little while.
Of course, this is just a temporary solution until you can get to a place/time when it is convenient to change the oil (and the filter again).
Filters are cheap, and very easy to access on a 997.2 (not so much on a 997.1) and you could change it every weekend, if you are inclined to.

Many years ago, probably in about 2006, I remember reading about changing the oil filter 1/2 way through your oil drain interval in a detailed paper from L&N Engineering. I'm not sure what Charles position is on this currently.
