Default Looking for extra top for my stock M97 air box

As a result of scored bores, I had my engine rebuilt, this time as a 4.0 liter. I am very, very happy with the results.

However, every time I lift the engine lid I see the top of my stock air box top with the metal label for a "3.8" liter, and it annoys me. I would like to keep my original air box top half in its original condition (on a shelf in the garage), and replace it with another clean air box top, replacing the original Porsche label with one I custom fabricate and laser-engrave calling out "4.0" instead.

I don't want to spend big bucks on a second brand-new OEM air box top, and I have not been successful obtaining one through my initial (apparently feeble) attempts to get a second-hand one.

There must be hundreds of unused and un-needed M97 stock air boxes on peoples' garage shelves all over the world as a result of cold air intake conversions, but I do not know how to tap this resource except through this forum. Suggestions?

Part # is 997-110-921-01 (for complete air box), and I don't know if there is a number for just the top or not.

They come up for sale in the marketplace from time to time for $100-$200.

Thr 997 airbox is a nice upgrade for the 996 engines which is why there isn't the surplus of them you'd expect.

If just modify the tag on your original one while you search for another to "put on the shelf".

Too logical for me. I try to keep all of the stock goodies I have swapped out in storage so they could all be restored by someone else (or even me) in the future, and upgrade or modify a different set for daily operations. From my way of thinking, if the probability of obtaining a second air box top is low, I would rather not permanently modify my original. If the probability is high, then I would rather wait and operate on the second one. Although new air boxes are available new, this project is definitely not worth spending the $700+. I already spent a lot of money on the engine rebuild itself.

Your response intrigued me, though. You say these come up for sale in the marketplace from time to time. I have been following Ebay, LA Dismantlers, etc., for some time now, but I have never seen even one. Where should I be looking?

Many thanks for your response, and all your other highly informative posts on Rennlist!

Try searching for "997 airbox" on eBay. There's one for under $300 shipped right now.

But you will never return your engine to a 3.8, so why would you wanna keep that air box cover.

It's entirely possible I could screw it completely up, so I would rather experiment on a second one.

Are the 3.6 liter boxes the same as the 3.8 liter boxes? I see two part numbers on the bottom label -- one right and one wrong.

3.6 and 3.8 are the same airbox. Different part number because of the different engine displacement tag on the top.

I don't think the 997.2 airbox csn be used in a 997.1. I know the position and angle of the throttle body is different between the 2 generations. What I don't know is if the airboxes themselves are different. Maybe you can use the hose from the 997.1 box on the 997.2 box if the outlet is the same size and in exactly the same place.

Is that piece aluminum? If so, maybe just polish the whole thing or polish it and put a 4.0 decal on it?

I’ve found a 997.1 3.6-liter box at a reasonable price thanks to your help. I’ll post about it should everything work out well. Give me 2-3 weeks — I only have a little time on weekends to play with my toys.

Please hang onto it for a little longer. I still might botch the first one!
