1 - Doritos. I prefer Cool Ranch when southbound, but anything works when nearing your destination
2 - Lindt chocolate - Don't sit in sun on passenger seat. Just don't do it
3 - Bill Evans piano (any recording) - doesn't work... cabin is too loud to appreciate chord voicings
4 - Good time to pour Techron in the tank... two in a row feels great (I don't know if it really does anything but feels good to do so)
5 - Great time to fiddle with the trip computer... wow, check out your altitude.. 6 satellites!! OK, that was useless.
6 - Hmmmm gas mileage at 70mpg in 5th..... ok, in 6th..... not sure what I just learned
7 - Hey Christian programming on the radio!!! Again!!! Again!!!..... hmmm... maybe inaudible Bill Evans is better
8 - Why do Subarus drive so slowly in the left lane?
9 - WTF bug made that red and yellow splat???
10 - What?! Pee again????
11 - Gee, how many Waffle Houses are there?
12 - BING! low gas warning.... crap! where are all the gas stations gone?

Peace

Kind of hard to tell with your "travel gear" obscuring some of the interior but what can be seen looks amazing to me for a car with 144,000 miles. No trash cans along your route

That is an older picture... but I still think I took that after I hit 100K miles. I just take care of the car... but use it. It has its nicks and scratches in the interior paint. In fact, I am casually looking for how to repair some of that. I have many nicks on the driver door.... the paint around window switches and along the edge of the door cubby lid... looks kinda bad.

I am amazed that Porsche uses quality foam in the seats. My wife's Lexus IS250 seats are getting noticeably squashed after just 70K miles and she is a tiny person. I believe that Porsche is one of the few makers in the world that actually gives you quality components for all that money.

Trash cans slow me down.

Peace

All good advice esp Bruce in Philly!

Last Jan I drove 9 days from Toronto to Palm Springs. Never hit a freeway and averaged 8 - 12 hrs driving each day on back/secondary roads. Oh and I had to come back. About 13,000 kms in total

Planned each day on Google maps and hits many of the routes suggested here. Was a hell of an adventure. I still have each days google map from heading down Blue Ridge, Cherohala etc. If you are interested would be happy to share. Just loaded it each morning and hit the road

AAA will be best but I did take a plug kit and some fresh slime. There were times when I had no cell service and didnt see another car for hours. Always fueled up when I had at least a quarter tank left just in case

Relax and enjoy the trip

Default patch kit / spare recs

here's a good tire patch kit, with all the tools you need and spare valves, etc., less than 30 bucks:
Amazon Amazon

Don't want to start the rennlist flame wars about flats, but as someone who hates to rely on other people to get me out of a jam, I carry a spare. After going 30 years without a flat, I got 3 in the past 2 years, 2 being tire-totaling sidewall wreckers on tiny curbs. Patch kit doesn't work on a one inch sidewall hole. so...

I recommend getting a spare tire eventually. You can buy the one from Suncoast for $1,200, but many others here have pointed out alternatives:

I bought a mint 996 16" collapsible spare on ebay for $150, plus you will need:
  • a tire cover for $7 (
    Amazon Amazon
    ), which helps you tie it down in the frunk, and which the 19" flat tire will also fit in to keep your car clean,
  • a compact jack for $25 (
    Amazon Amazon
    )
  • 18 or 24 inch breaker bar for $10-20 (
    Amazon Amazon
    )
  • 19MM soft sided lug socket. (
    Amazon Amazon
    )
The whole spare wheel setup easily fits in my small C4S frunk and takes up about 1/3 of the space. For me, it's $225 for peace of mind.

If you carry a spare, check the torque on your wheel lugs . Sometimes the techs torque the daylight out of them, and even with a breaker bar they can be very hard to remove. When you have 15 minutes, crack and retorque all your lugs to I believe 96 ft/lbs. Then you won't be struggling with removing the lugs when you need to.

Enjoy the ride...

+1 The place is in the middle of nowhere with a line out the door. The Bbq was excellent, some of the best I've had. I'm a tough critic when it comes to barbecue.

I think thats in Waynesville which is 20 or 30 mi from Asheville. Should be exit 215 or 276, both great roads off the BRP. Most off the BRP are scenic and great drives because the BRP is on the peak ridge of the mountains, and you have to go up or down 1000 to 2000 ft to access the parkway

You can probably make a call all the way along the route to the smokeys, but on my western US route there was no cell signal 75% of the time. You've got to be self-reliant out here. That said, there were lots of hollers and valleys with no cell signal around the smokeys too, but areas you could walk out to get phone coverage.

When are you going to be in the Smokies? There is a Porsche event driving those mountain roads on October 19th and 20th, called the Rennsport Dragon Rally, and I'll be there. There were about 100 Porsches at the June event and you'll do several hours of driving on both days of the event.
