Default My # 6 bore

Hey gang....

While I had my car up on jack stands last weekend, when I did my starter, I decided to try out my mini scope camera setup I got from Amazon. Seeing that cylinder 6 is pretty easy to get to without taking off the mufflers I pulled the coil and plug and went in for a dive... ;-)

Below are my pics of number 6 bore and piston.... Car sounds and drives perfect. No weird noises or ticks. Has always been a bit of an oil eater...but has not changed it's habit in the two years I have owned it. 20K km added since I got it. I get about 1400 km per liter of oil mix of city and hwy driving.

Concerns:
  • Don't see any signs of bore scoring other than the one pic that does have one vertical line showing. Is that sumth to keep an eye on?
  • The amount of Carbon on top of the piston? Is that normal?
  • The piston and cylinder do look quite oily... I did just spin the car around in my driveway though when doing the work on my starter.. so it only ran for 45 second or so then parked.
  • How does the spark plug look? Car has 58K km on it now.

Thanks.

Plug looks like it's got some carbon/oil buildup?

Looks like a gently driven car. Does it see any RPM often? Automatic?

Nice resolution on the borescope image. Way better than the expensive Snap-on they used at the indy shop i had a scope done at.

Like everyone always says scoring starts at the bottom so you never really know until you see the bottom but what you can see there looks pretty good. Way better than the 996 i had scoped.

6 speed. ;-).
Ya. I don’t track it. I give her once and a while. Cruise around 3500 - 4000 rpm when on highway.

Guess I should get on her a bit more. ;-) LOL Been to nice to her.

Should I do anything to try and get rid of that carbon? Fuel treatment etc?

ya was super happy with the quality of the pics as well. ;-)

I think we can scope from the oil pan pretty easy on a 997.1 right? I may do that at my next oill change. Get a good look at all of the cylinders ;-)

What year and model???? .1 or .2, S or non S ???

My guess with that carbon build-up is a .2 cause the direct injection in .2 is know to create carbon build-up and it needs to be cleaned up.

That is a pretty fouled plug. I would talk to an expert... not saying you have a problem, but I changed plugs three times in my 2009 C2S and once in a friend's 996 and never saw anything like that.

Maybe running it harder ... aka Italian tuneup will keep it clear. Run a few tanks in a row with concentrated Techron or other.

Peace

I don't think that amount of carbon and oil wetness are good in there. How diligent are you about making sure the oil level isn't over filled. I would change your plugs, make sure the oil level is good, run it a few hundred miles and look inside that cylinder again, and after a long drive, not a move around the driveway.

My bad. It’s a 2007 Carrera S. 997.1

How should I clean it? ;-)

I bought this one from Amazon. Looks like it’s not available anymore. But there are lots of others that look very similar.

Thanks Bruce. I will do just that. ;-). Take another look in a month or so. Drive her a bit harder as well.
