I've owned my 2010 Targa 4S for nearly a year now and love it.
But there's a 2016 Boxster Spyder local to me calling my name. I've resisted the urge to go drive it thus far, someone talk me out of it????
1) It's more money than my Targa was, but the Spyders in general seem to be holding their value strongly. Seems like there may be more of a depreciation curve to ride down with the Spyder (Although the 987 Spyders are still priced fairly high so maybe not?)
2) Backseats are useful to me for the next 5 or so years as I have kids who ride with me occasionally. I drive my 911 2-3 times a week as a "commuter" + weekend fun trips in the twisty roads.
3) 911 is iconic. We all grew up wanting a 911. No one grew up wanting a Boxster? Some might say that doesn't matter, but it does?
4) Spyder is probably 400 lbs lighter than my Targa with similar power output. That's gotta be more fun to drive in the twisties.... which if true has to be pretty damn amazing because the 911 is awesome.
5) Spyder has the 6speed. Some days I regret not getting the 6 speed 911.

Went from a 997.1 to a 2011 987 Spyder back to a 997.2 C4S. Spyder drove on rails. Had sport exhaust and was a very visceral drive with the top off. Eventually I began to miss the Iconic 911 Shape, the back seats and a solid roof. The top was cool but I got tired of manually stowing it each time And at the end of the day I was driving a Boxster and not a 911

The Spiders are wicked cool, but not particularly practical. And I would think a little less so in Idaho. A lot depends oh how you enjoy your targa currently, longer drives, shorter drives, good weather only, inclement weather, commuting or just fun time. The spider will more likely maintain it’s value a bit better over the long run and should you want to sell/trade it you will more likely have a larger market. With all that said just gotta go with your passion. Cheers

I love the Spyder. It's the only Boxster / Cayman based model I'd own, not as a replacement for a 997 though, but as another Porsche.
