Default Removable Hardtop Q:

Debating getting a removable hard top for my 997.2 2011. What are the cons here? I don't see it discussed anywhere that the top will be folded for a lengthy period of time (winter). Thanks.

What I’ve seen in other posts, is that for the hardtop installation, your car must be already fitted with the “brackets” (or whatever are called) in order to affix the hardtop properly. It was an option, I believe, but seems that very few Cabriolets came with it from factory. However, i read that it can be Installed, but at the cost of 2-3k$ I believe. This plus the cost of the hardtop (another amount of $$$). So all in all expect to spend about 4-5k maybe more. Then you also have to have a place to hang the hardtop when is not installed. It can be done, but it will be costly. Those are estimates for my 997.1, I don’t know if for yours could be similar or little bit more.

Install those and get a matching top. The wiring is there. There is just a plastic bracket from the factory that needs removed. Takes 20 min

the top has to match the brackets. They changed from a pointed to flat tip about 2002

I bought my hardtop off ebay. $500. Took out the plastic dummy insert receivers and replaced with the screw in metal mounts (not old bayonette type). I paid like $200 max for the two receiver inserts. Did the work myself. Easy to do. I love putting it on in Nov/Dec and leave it on till May. Any questions let me know - private message me. I've had 2 p-cars with it. There are some things you learn only by trial and error so ....hey go for it.

And don't worry about the top being folded. It's going to wear in the standard places no matter what you do and need replaced after a while.

If you want more info go to Search this forum and plug in "How to retrofit a 996 hardtop to fit a 997". This thread is like going to school. You will learn everything there is to learn about removable hardtops. From bayonette to thread type mechanism for securing the hardtop onto the car. The thread has great pictures of a 997 with the plastic dummy receiver and pics of the actual receivers to buy (from Suncoastparts.com). My cost to add a used hardtop was $1000 approximately for everything. Good luck.

My previously owned 2009 4S came with the hard top when I bought it and I love it. First, there aren't a bunch of them around so your P car has a unique look and different from the coupes. Second, it is easy to remove and install but it requires a minimum of 2 people, three is even better. Third I store it on a rolling rack when it isn't on the car, doesn't take up any more floor space than a lawnmower.

I really want one but don't really need one...kinda like a 911, lol.

i wonder how hard it would be to find one in meteor gray metallic? It's a popular 997 color but it seems like 75% of the ones i see for sale are Arctic Silver, most of the rest are black.

Any competent body shop can paint one any color you want.
