2007 911 depress clutch makes knock sound
Hello, my Carrera has 83,000 miles on it. Today it started to make a knocking sound when the clutch pedal is depressed. This is not a continuous noise but rather one depression makes one knock. It happens with the engine running and not running. It is coming from the back of the car. The clutch otherwise works fine and there are no noises or vibrations while driving. It is something related to disengaging the clutch. Going to call dealer in the morning but wondering what this likely could be. Thanks in advance.

If its when you depress the peddle you can likely zero in on the throw bearing, slave cylinder, or release arm. At 83k miles the throw bearing is likely worn pretty good but unsure that would cause a "knock". Its common for the rubber boot on the slave cylinder piston to get brittle and fall off, allowing the metal piston to rub on the release arm. That could cause some noise.
Anyway, you likely have a clutch in your future. There isn't too much you can do to diagnose without dropping the transmission. At 83k miles you've had a good run.

Take a look at the transmission mounts too. They may have gone bad and are allowing too much movement of the transmission when the load changes.

My car had the slave plastic tip break off which let to the metal rod wearing a divot in the fork which caused this.
Had to replace the fork and Slave.

It's a clutch job+ time. When it knocks, something else has worn off. Count on Clutch disc, pressure plate, throw-out bearing, pilot bearing, flywheel (maybe), slave cylinder, and possibly gearbox mount.

Yea the ****ty thing is you cant just buy the $2 rubber boot to fix the slave cylinder. You need to buy a $250 unit.
Also need to order the release arm separately as that doesn't come in the clutch kit. My indy told me once its scored you need to replace it or it will just rip the new slave boot.

Thank you for all the replies. I dropped it off at an independent garage this morning. Oddly, on the 11 mile drive there this morning, on and off the clutch 50+ times at least, the noise went away. This afternoon when I called they said they couldn't reproduce the noise. Then called back to say they were able to. Said the noise occurs at different degrees of pedal depression. Aye, that would be what I experienced

That picture is of the slave cylinder. When you push on the clutch pedal, the master cylinder pushes fluid to the slave cylinder and the little metal pokey thing comes out of its boot and pushes on the actuating arm which pushes the throwout bearing away from the clutch disc and releases the gear box from the engine.
There is a hard plastic piece covering the end of the pokey thing (the rod) so that it engages the actuating arm in a quiet and smooth way. That plastic piece has worn off or fallen off from the slave cylinder in the picture for a while now. Notice that its tip is ground off. There is probably a divet on the actuating arm which means you want to replace that arm as well.

OK, how I should have asked it is "what vector is made up by the camera and the rubber boot" (where is the camera, and in what direction is it pointing). What is all the stuff behind the slave cylinder. It is detached from the transmission so we're looking at a partial disassembly?

Just pull the slave out and see if the rod has broken through. You can get a little mirror and see if the fork has a divot too before you rip everything apart.
