997 wouldn't start after leaving it sit for about a month

A 997, without extra accessories, has a constant 40/45mA current draw. That is approximately 1Ah/day loss of battery capacity. 30 days idling is a whopping 30Ah capacity loss. A battery with a few years losing that much capacity may not be able to crank a starter.
Also... I do not recommend jump starting a battery and charging it with the car's alternator. Alternators were not designed to fully charge a battery. Yes, they will do it but they will be stressed. Use instead an external battery charger.

Thanks for all the info. Ordered a charger and maintainer. It took about 12 hours for full charge and boom, my baby is firing up nicely as usual. Lot of good info to maintain the battery and things to do while storing cars for a while. This forum is awesome for beginners like me!!! You guys rock!!!

If I even think it might be a week or more I put in on the maintainer.
Also consider an AGM when replacing - I am looking forward to when my battery fails
