I've just acquired a 2009 997.2 Targa 4S -- I've seen threads here telling me how to figure out what PCM version I have, but haven't tried the process yet. Can anyone just tell me if it's possible to install apple carplay in a 997.2, or would that be too simple?

Not without some effort. Why not use Google for your answer - try "can apple CarPlay be installed in 997.2" in Google search.

There are a bazillion threads on this topic. But it seems (to me) a lot are about the 997.1, include lots of discussions about amp upgrades, speaker upgrades, satellite radio, whether you have or will replace the Bose amp, a few reports of degraded sound quality, firmware upgrades, adding backup cameras, etc. Some of the setups are big $$$
I find it's not the easiest topic to navigate (e.g. I still can't figure out if the Bose setup on the .1 and .2 cars the exact same, and if you can use the exact same aftermarket adapters).
Assuming you're not picky about sound quality in the 997.2 just so long as it doesn't degrade (frankly the tire roar in the 997.2 is a lot), and you have Bose (which a lot of cars do), then I think the following is the minimum path to adding Apple Car Play to a 997.2 fitted with Bose.
Get adapter/interface X, to connect to the Bose amp (the Suncoast part above seems to have an option for that)
Get headend unit Y with Apple Car Play, that'll work with adapter X
It'd be brilliant if someone could jump in and make a specific recommendation for X and Y, that's proven to be plug & play on a 997.2 with Bose, and economically priced...
Karl.

If you have the aux input with 30 pin iPod connector just get a Bovee 1000 for $80. Link to amazon
It allows your iPhone to stream all sound including music, directions, Waze through bluetooth to the car. Also allows control of music including pause, play, next using the Porsche stereo controls. Further shows the name of what you are listening to. Regular phone control still works thought the PCM with your phone.
Will not work with the Porsche GPS but your directions from the iPhone will come through the speakers. I have the rennlist mount that puts the phone right at shifter level so easy to look at if needed.
Expensive to retrofit a stereo to the 911 as you need to integrate in with the fiberoptic cable. If you find a cheaper solution please let me know, but this delivers a lot of functionality for $80.

Agree with this. I had to replace my PCM with Dension as it broke otherwise i wouldnt have bothered. The new units are more up to date/sleaker but unless you replace the amp and maybe speakers ($$) then you are not going to improve the sound. You go from a 4.1 channel system to a 2 channel system as no one has made a MOST adapter that deals with more than 2 channels. no idea why
I dont know about Carplay but i can tell you Android Auto is not worth it, at least to me. Its buggy (tells me my phone isnt supported half the time or it connects for 30 mins then just drops) and the nav functionality is a lot less then you get through Google Maps on your phone (ie you cant pull up customized My Maps that you have saved on your phone which is a ridiculous limitation in my view). So if you used customized maps then using your phone is the only good way to go. I am likely going to just deleted android auto from my phone as it just bungs it up as it tries to load up every time i plug it in to the HU to charge
As far as what HU, go to something like Crutchfield. It tells you which units work and just pick what functionality you want. If you want NAV built into the unit then those are more expensive (although with nav on phones not sure its worth it)
Just to add to above points, get yourself a [url=http://Porsche 911 (997's only) 05 10, Boxster 05 12, Cayman 06-12, Club Coupe 06, 911 GT2 & Gt3 2011, 911 Targa 08 11, (75132105) [ame]https://www.amazon.com/dp/B000M85JHO/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_tai_q38NCbX2T67YF]panavise mount[/ame] so you can see your phone visibly. Not to mention the sq you’ll destroy (coming from a Bose hater) you’ll also loose the basic data shown in dash like mpg for trips, distance... If they made something like the maestro datalink I’d consider replacing my hu, but would also have to do a full system then with sound calibrating tools. Bottom line, for me it’s not worth it. I’ve done too many stereo builds, this car oob has pretty decent sound.
I did not lose any of the mpg/trip data in the switch over. I believe this is because of the Can bus connection provided by the wire harness i got as part of the Crutchfield package. I believe you lose the ability to see what song is playing on the centre display but i never used that anyways
I have a suction window mount that sits just below the rear view mirror. Good location as you can just glance over rather than down to see map info. I used to have one the slid in to the CD slot but that became irrelevant when i pulled the pcm as the new HU doesnt have CD
I think I know some of your confusion. The 997.2 have pcm 3.0 and you can't add CarPlay without changing the head unit. PCM 3.1 like in the macan you can add a board to to convert to car play.
I converted to Apple CarPlay for my 997.2 with 3.0 PCM
Made the conversion and I am thrilled. I was getting distracted with navigating at speed with the phone. Waze among other features is very beneficial on the console screen. It required a new compatible radio (pioneer) an optical cable compatible with the Bose amp. I used a cable designed for the cayenne and pcm 3.0 and it works great after my installer worked some magic on the wiring so it would power and function as expected. The look is clean - no wires and phone mounts and it functions as hoped and sounds the same to me. Crutchfield was helpful sorting through the option for my specific model. Wasn´t cheap, but was money well spent and a significant upgrade. Saved all the old stuff in the event of a sale. I’ll post photos our video.
My 997.2 is being delivered in a few days. I bought a Bovee 1000 rather than mess with upgrading the HU. I researched it a bit and it seemed like it was just enough of a pain (and expense) that I didn't want to deal with it. I'll see how the Bovee works. I can't say i've ever really been bothered by using the nav on my phone so HU replacement is a big task to upgrade for something that isn't an issue for me. If i was in love with CarPlay i would probably do it but it i haven't really got much out of it when i've used it.
Our Audi Q5 and new Jeep Wrangler both have smart phone connectivity, and I had to buy a 911 with it, or install an aftermarket system immediately after purchase.
Well, I was lucky enough that the Targa I found had a Pioneer system already installed.
Makes the 997.1 feel totally updated except that I still have to use a key. Keyless entry and push start would be awesome. I am so used to our other 2 vehicles that 50% of the time, I have to fish the key in my pocket once comfortably installed in the car🙄 that annoys me a little.
I have found the best way to hook up an iphone is using the ipad cord with an adapter for the newer iphone plugs. It's the only option that actually charges the phone. I use the factory nav and listen to Apple music and xm directly off my phone.
