Thanks for the reply. The rattle occurs in the 2800 - 3000 rpm range.

My mystery noise turned out to be the two year old water pump. Not the same as your noise.
Good luck. I hope its nothing serious.
Keep us posted.
We all need new noises to feed our paranoia

Did you get to the bottom of this? I have a similar sound…

So far we have tried the oil pressure relief valve and tandem pump. Trying chain tensioners next, then we are thinking the oil pump.

So far i am living with the sound and trying not to replicate it : as ) it only happens when you rev a hot car to 3-4k rpm in situ.. which is not a common thing to do anyway..

Nowadays the sound is less than it used to be.. there are no other symptoms..

please .. please.. write here if you solve what is it..

regards

sinan

I think I've got the same issue.

Came up after a round of spirited driving. To me it sounds like an exhaust clamp. It's not frequent but definitely shows itself in the 3k RPM range.

The PO of my car did have a fab speed exhaust, so what I have is definitely just clamped in place.

Did anyone ever solve this?

The rattle on my car turned out to be a crack in the passenger side muffler (Tubi muffler) where the exit pipe connects to the muffler. After I had the crack welded, the rattle went away. However, after a few months, the weld cracked and the rattle came back.

Welp, turns out the issue presented itself today for me! Looks like a water pump went bad. The sound was coming from the left side near the alternator and this happened when I parked it today.

Well, at least you know what the problem was. How many miles on your car if you don’t mind me asking?

I'm glad I don't have to pay money to search out the problem lol.

Just rolled over 35,000 miles recently, 08 C2S. Florida car until I bought it with 30k on the clock in Feb 2020.

Based on the records I have, it doesn't look like it was ever performed.

Ironically I was in at a dealer a few weeks ago for an oil change because my indy was busy, they looked over the car and it passed their normal checks.

No symptoms til the previous time I had driven it last weekend. Popped today.

Wow, that’s pretty low miles for the water pump to fail. I have an 07C2S with 42K now and still on original WP. Hoping mine can last a while longer.

did you ever figure out what that was? I have the exact same sound in the same area. Water pump is brand new, thinking could also be oil pump. But who’s to say new parts can’t fail too?

I have the exact same noise on my 987.1 Boxster as demonstrated in the google drive link posted above. Anyone have a noise like this and found a remedy? I'm doubtful it's the water pump. I'll be changing the oil relief valve at my next oil change, but I'm worried it's the oil pump or something else.

Update: Just replaced my oil pressure relief valve during my oil change… noise still persists. I do notice, however, at temperatures typically under 50F that the noise is greatly reduced or not present at all (warm or cold engine). Another clue for this mystery.
