Default Engine mount nut stuck

Last weekend I decided to finally start on my project to replace the engine mounts. Everything was going according to plan, and I got the passenger side mount out and replaced in 15 minutes. Then I started on the drivers side engine mount and the nut on the lower bolt and it would not move. I applied leverage and got the nut to turn but I had turned it for almost an hour (very slowly) without any change in the amount of torque required to spin the nut. I'm not sure if I am removing the bolt from the engine mount but it almost seems like no progress has been made. The bolts on the top side are easily removed. After an hour or so of spinning it, I stopped, had a few beverages, and put everything back together for another day. Has anyone else run into this and if so, what did you do to remove the nut/bolt? I'm ready to take it to the shop to have them try to remove but thought I would reach out to the forums first. Thanks!

I just use leverage or impact guns. If the nut spins but not coming out, then my guess is the long stud has been stripped. That is bad.

Agree. Sounds like the stud is spinning along with the nut. That's a tough one.

I assume you are talking about the 18mm (16?) nut that goes on this?

Here a pic of a 997TT mount.. maybe the entire part of the mount is spinning inside the outter casing? See the square indentation at the top? (bottom in the pic) That should sit into a cutout on the engine carrier to keep the mount in place.. Near as I can tell, the shaft of the mount is the same part as the square mounting.

Maybe when you undid the top-side bolts, could the mount have lifted slightly out of the indentation, allowing the shaft to spin?

Might be worth checking..

OP, this is exactly what's happening. The engine carrier needs to stay tight against the underside of the motor mount with the squares engaged to be able to loosen the nut. Hopefully, you haven't bent or rounded out the square in the carrier or its going to make this job a challenge this and future times.

That is probably correct. You loosen the bottom nut before you mess with the top side.

Thanks for the tip, I'm about to do this. Sounds obvious now that it has been said, but also like something I would have done myself if not for this forum.

The threads and nut you are trying to turn are constantly exposed to the elements. Hit them with PB Blaster and let it sit overnight. Only if securing the top portion does not work first. I had same issue when putting in my Rennline mounts.

Good luck!

Thanks everyone. I didn't unscrew the top bolts completely out but did I loosen them. When I couldn't spin the 18mm nut, I screwed the top bolts securely again. I didn't see any movement of the engine mount but I'm starting to worry if I've rounded out the square. I also tried WD40 which didn't work, but I'll try the PB Blaster overnight.

I think your best bet is a deep impact socket on a 1/2” drive pneumatic or cordless impact wrench.

Or cut the nut/bolt out perhaps with a dremmel

Can you get a nut breaker on it?

(aka, nut splitter, nut buster).

Problem Solved!

I thought about the dremmel but i'm not agile enough to get my hands in there to use it effectively.

I applied the PB Blaster on it (that stuff really smells) and soaked it for a while. I then used a long breaker bar to spin it again, it seemed to be turning without any squeakiness but with still a lot of force. Then, the bolt sheared straight off with the nut on it. I was worried that the engine mount was forever stuck, but when I removed the top two screws the whole thing came right out! Thanks for all the help!

Awesome, glad you got it out with a bit of elbow grease. As always, use proper torque to install the new mounts.

Since you're in Illinois I think the combo of heat cycles, water and road chemicals froze that nut to the shaft. Corrosion on the exhaust system fasteners is even worse, as you may have seen while you were doing this job. Speaks well for using a dab of anti seize paste on the new fasteners.
