Default 997.2 Engine case weld repair

Hi All,
I have found a damaged 997.2 S motor out of a wreck, 70,000km, the thing was ripped clean off the transmission and it has casing damage around the bell housing area.

Is it possible to weld the casing material and re-machine? Some say this particular alloy is "unweldable" but I think they are confusing the engine bores, silica coatings and weld repairing them a'la "D-chunk" series 1 engines.

Its actually a running engine, should I just buy it as a "Parts Bank" or repair and sell?

I would post a picture, but I havent figured it out yet.

Does it even need to be welded to be functional?

I'd post a picture, I do the "Browse Device" and "Drag & Drop" . The attachment management window rips to 99%, then, nada.

If functionality means the ability to bolt the motor to a gearbox, then yes, welding is neccessary : )

There's a delay between 99 and 100 and between 100 and when the thumbnail shows up. Sometimes it takes a couple tries for it to work properly.

Oops, sorry everyone, I’m in a very remote location and it appears I’ve overachieved with posting my picture. Let’s call it South Pacific Lag.

Do you have the piece that broke off? If yes, then I think a TIG weld repair is possible. I don’t think it would be feasible to build the entire missing area with weld then machine down.

I doubt one can restore the original level of strength to the housing. I think this will end up as simply a damaged aluminum alloy casting holding a number of used parts.
