The one I listed has a screw on attachment with a 90 degree mirror. It is very secure.

A quick update:

- changed oil and checked for any debris in oil and filter, nothing found

- added 5w40 royal purple new oil
- added valve lifter cleaner additive
Tapping noise still exists

-checked engine compression
all are in 275 , same compression on all.

-removed spark plugs, they look very oily
(check attached pics)

i will with new spark plugs as a last resort

did you scope them with the plugs out? Have you sent a oil sample to Black Stone? Have you popped off the AOS vent to the intake to see if oil is pooling there?

thanks for the feedback rtl.

im not from usa so is hard for me to find a service like black Stone to check the oil.

yes, scope is still pending. But i wonder why would we get good solid compression if a cylinder is scored...

can you give me more details about checking the AOS so i can explain this to my mechanic? I would really appreciate it!!

There is a line that comes up and attached to the throttle body from the AOS. If your AOS is not functioning 100% it will let oil straight into the intake that can cause your symptoms.

what would a Black Stone sample tell you with regard to these symptoms?

I sent Black Stone a sample and the report was interesting. Went over it with my mechanic. Very helpful and addressed IMS (said it was not an issue), but didn’t see anything that would discuss a scoring issue.

Thanks for any info.

The Blackstone report is not really designed to pick up indications of bore score *as* it is happening. It might indicate a small increase in aluminum, for example, but it cannot distinguish the source of the aluminum as coming from the cylinder walls. However, with my bore-scored engine, I found it useful in confirming how badly scored the bore(s) were getting after I knew I already had a scored #6 cylinder when Blackstone reported significantly increasing fuel dilution of my oil. That is how I determined when I actually had to get my engine rebuilt. I was also logging my oil consumption all along, and the Blackstone report of fuel dilution correlated with the increasing oil consumption.

Hi guys,

We have confirmed that it is in fact bore scoring in 6 cylinder . As a porsche fan, im really disappointed with the m97 engine.

Along with the ims known issues, the cylinder wall scoring is an issue that has to be taken very seriously I think its not a minority like everyone thinks...

If you are considering buying a 997.1S or already own one pay close attention to this issue as it seems to be a
ticking time bomb. My advice would be to save for a 997.2

For everyone reference this car has 70.000kms , meticulously done oil changes every year using 0w40 , daily driven for no more than 5kms and stock parts.

Now i have a 40K flower pot in my front yard.

i will have to see what can i do with the car.

thanks to everyone for the help

Major bummer man, sorry- I would do a rebuild get nickies and never worry about it again. Do you have pictures of the scoring?

Sorry to hear. I hope you can find an economical solution.

They say short trips and those that are lightly driven have the highest chance of developing the problem. So 5 km/drive may have put you in the higher risk category.

Damn, very sorry to hear this. Is this issue also a concern with the non-S 997.1's?

Yes. Cylinder scoring is prevalent in all models with forged pistons, but most common in 3.6 and 3.8 models. We don't see scoring in models with cast pistons.
