Yes. You could also replace with a new fresh filter, to "soak up" some of the excess. Bag the old one to keep clean, and use next oil change. May need to repeat the dumping step the next day/drive cycle.

You should really be warming up the engine to get the oil hot before doing an oil change (like a 10-15 minute drive), as it helps it to flow out better (thinner) and it takes any contaminants that might have settled somewhere and puts them back into the oil so they get drained away with the oil.

I keep a couple old 5 qt oil jugs around just for this reason. When I drain the oil, I measure how much comes out, and put that much back in. Oil filter trick works as well in a pinch.

I did. it still shows full lights on the oil bar. I am going to remove the filter housing today and see if that does the trick.

so I ended up dumping out two oil filter housings of oil to get it to the top fill line so I took out about 1/2 a quart
