Default Muffler Mistake

The other day I was following a friend through some great back roads. He was driving his 991 and I was driving my 2007 997.1 C4. I was amazed how his muffler sounded. There was a throaty sound when accelerating and a great gurgley sound when his foot came off of the gas. I am sure there are so many varying opinions on what is best BUT...I will ask anyway. Is there a way to get this sound? The gurgley sound is really what I am after. Would a gundo hack do this? Yes..I have a price. As much as I loved the sound, I am not willing to put thousands into it to get it. Get me that sound on a budget. Thanks!

Gundo definitely gurgles on decel. Ain't bad for a few hundred. Not sure what it sounds like on a .1 though. Perhaps someone in your area has one set up that way.

My Fister gurgles on downshifts and on decel but nothing like the newer cars where the gurgle in programmed in. This is also the case with my friend's M3 ZCP with MPE. That thing just sounds bananas. I LOVE the crackles, pops, and gurgles. I actually do not care that it is artificially programmed to overrun, it sounds amazing. With my Fister, it has a great startup gurgle. It has some nice revving burbles and pops. When up to temp, there are some nice noises on decel and especially when downshifting. You can kind of learn to exploit the sweet spots more (i.e. when I am cruising, I will shift out of first at 4k and just hesitate a bit to let the revs drop before putting it in second. I get a nice upshift crackle/pop kind of burbly gurgly soundamajiggy. You get the idea. IDK if anyone has done really good soundbites driving with the fister exhaust but there are a lot of you tube videos (including my super amazing/mind blowing one) that show the sounds from idling, to revving like a cocksnard, to driving around, and flybys... In any case, it'd be the cheapest way to get some of this effect from your 911.

p.s. if you are in or around LA, we could coordinate some kind of Angeles Crest barraaap sound funtimes up to Newcomb's for a sandwich and some coffee or something.

+1 Fister. Porsche Sport exhaust sound on at all times and sounds so good. No on/off flap/switch
+1 that on the newer cars that snap crackle pop is all programmed by spitting in extra fuel on decel.
+1 On our 997.1 cars, cold starts do something very similar in order to warm up the engine faster and get the cats up to operating/burn temps. Love that sound too, but it does not last long

I had a 135i with PPK, and that software upgrade (from BMW) added loads of snap, crackle and pops - which sounded great. But knowing it was synthesized always nagged at me a little, kinda like (but nowhere near as bad as) newer cars piping engine noises into the cabin via the speakers.

More recently I came across a video clip of a 991.2 w/PSE where they’d strapped a camera to the rear bumper. They were climbing a hill without changing gear, just accelerating/decelerating between corners. On each lift of the accelerator, the pattern of pops/gurgles/etc. sounded exactly the same - like the algorithm didn't introduced enough ‘randomness’ on how fuel was injected after each lift for SFX. I find it hard to ‘unknow’ that. If I can find that clip again, I’ll post it.

Karl.

My wife's 997.1 C2S has gundo mufflers and it crackles and pops on decel even after it's warmed up. Gundo or Fister is probably what you're after.

I have the PSE on my '10 4S 6 speed and I also did the Sharkworks X pipe (center muffler delete) and it sounds perfect.

hello,

i have a 997.2 carrera with a newly installed sharkwerks center x pipe, ipd plenum and bmc filters and was considering the fisters. How much power do you get?
is the noise still neighbor friendly?
im up at the crest every weekend and would love to hear it.

I think that an X-pipe design in favor of the over/under pipes helps with this sound a lot.

If you have $$ limitation, go Fister.

If you don't, then you can start looking at the likes of Tubi. They'll be more crackles and pops.

I wish I had more than Fisters but $$ mattered.... couldn't justify $3000 for a pair of tin cans from the overpriced aftermarket Porsche supplies lol.

Zero horsepower added with the Fisters, yes it is still neighborhood friendly.

Fisters + center muffler delete (which you already have) on the 997.2 is a must IMO.

On a 997.2, if you already did the center, the Fisters would sound very similar to my 997.1 with Fisters. I live only a couple exits away from Angeles Crest, so I am up there quite a bit but if we do not naturally run into each other soon, PM me and we can meet up at the bottom, or at Newcombs for sure. We have twinsies cars except I have a .1 on Lobster Forks. I am having this weird Porsche moment where I don't really want to do much to this car. It is good as is. I have had a lot of cars, and I have modded them all in some way or another until I owned my last car (a super loaded B8 Avant). So far, with my heavily optioned 997.1 C2S, all I really feel like it needs after 4 months is to open up the exhaust sound, which I did, and then some OEM+ suspension and possible wheel upgrading...but as far as more serious mods, after driving the car around LA in the city and canyons—I feel like the car is pretty much perfect as is. I only want to change some things Porsche did to gentle down the car for the US market.

Back on topic to the OP, the Fister exhaust is cheap enough that you should do this to feel out if it gives you what you want. If it doesn't, I am positive it would be simple to find someone who wants to trade you for OEM, or even possibly someone who is trying to go from an aftermarket exhaust back to something more mellow. In any case, good exhaust options for 997s are expensive, so it would be smart to try out the Fisters first. OEM exhausts are also pretty cheap used, so if you were worried about your stock cans, you could get some off eBay or something and mod those first. If it doesn't work out, sell them.

As mentioned above, I get pops and crackles a bit on every downshift but it isn't super clear in the cabin. I can kind of hear it but according to friends and family, it sounds really good from outside the car. Regardless, it isn't going to be as prominent as the burbling and other noises programmed into an ECU in any case with any exhaust to my knowledge.

Last, I know this popping and crackling is the hot thing right now but when you have neighbors that drive these cars (I have 3 neighbors with F80 M3 ZCPs, one has the MPE), it is actually REALLY annoying. One of my neighbors is a high school kid with a paint to sample F80 ZCP. He drives it in M-Mode 24/7 and his car sounds like a Harley the way he exploits the programming. When I first heard it, I thought it was NSFW level pornographic. Now, I want to throw tomatoes or something at him every damn time he comes to a stop at the corner by my house. I would argue that it would be a bummer to live with that all day every day, so the ability to turn it off has its benefits. ALL my neighbors up my street comment on how much they hate "those BMW cars" but really, after a couple years, only the high school kid ever comes crackling down the street. The rest of the dudes with their ZCPs drive in kitten mode in the neighborhood.

I have a 997.2 with Fister mufflers and unfortunately it doesn't have the crackles as pops as the software induced crackles and pops of the newer 991s. The Fisters are still well worth the $$ because they make the sound much more aggressive with some really nice gurgling on decel.

If someone would come out with a software module for 997s that induced the same crackles and pops as the 991s, I would buy it in a heartbeat.
