Installed my lower grills this weekend. Not only do they look great - they really finish what the factory should have done, but they are functional - they keep the cigarette butts, leaves, stones, birds, etc out of the radiator. It was a good opportunity to clean everything too, with the bumper cover off. When cleaning the rads, don't forget to undo the bolt (10mm) on the side and pull the front rad away from the rear, and clean well in between the two (on each side of the car). Not a bad job, just follow the write ups for bumper removal.
And a big shout out to my buddy Scott - he made the grills from his template and materials from the local big box. They look stock and fit perfectly. Rennline sells kits, but they are about $250 or so.
Hey, those look great and I can see they are functional. So, I want to do this. A couple questions, please. Did you have help? And, how long did the entire install take?
Yes they actually do improve the look IMHO, and they certainly are functional. Very solid install.
I did this job by myself (although my wife helped me hold and line up the bumper cover on re-install). The install of the grills is fairly easy. Here's a video from Rennline:
I had installed very similar grills previously on my Boxster, given to me by my buddy who makes his own templates. He helped a bunch with the Boxster, so that shortened my learning curve doing the 911 by myself. Nevertheless, the install is not hard. It is more of a PIA to remove and reinstall the front bumper cover than it is to affix these grills.
Also, I do not have the template - it's my buddy's. He uses material from the local big box, and fabs his own mounting hardware from thin sheet metal. Small sheet metal screws are used to mount the brackets to the inside lip of the bumper grill housing. The Rennline kit does the job though.
The whole job took a Saturday from late morning to late afternoon, but I spent a lot of time cleaning and scrubbing things before putting them back on - I am maniacal about that - I always thoroughly clean and inspect parts before putting them back on. And vacuum the radiators well while you have it all apart, including in between - just remove the one bolt and slide the front rad from the tabs to open it up, and vacuum the inside space well, being careful not to damage the fins. The hoses are flexible so don't be afraid to open the two rads up to get in there.
