997.2 Clutch Replacement Cost
There seems to be a lot of discussion around clutch replacement costs. I've just dropped my 2012 997.2 Carrera Cab at my local Indy and was quoted $2050 for parts and labor (OEM - Sachs brand), and potentially an additional $700 if the flywheel needs replacing. By contrast my local Porsche dealer wanted $3500 for parts and labor and potentially an additional $1300 if the flywheel needs replacing.

I read there is some confusion about this self adjusting system..... one guy said the plate can not be re-adjusted back to its start position without a lot of fiddly labor so he said all Ss get a new pressure plate.... my dealer said they replace it only if burnt.... mine was blue from overheating ... so they said.

I may be mistaken, but i remember reading the 997.2 press release yrs ago and noting that both the base and S version had the self-adjusting clutch. And just had the clutch replaced 8 months ago along with flywheel (pressure plate broke) by the dealer at around 3k dinero. Just crossed the 100k miles and car feels like day one. I wish i saved that press release and a search on Porsche website doesn't go that far

I always ask my local dealer what they would charge just for giggles. The service advisor said it was a 16hr job at a cost of $4-6k depending on if the flywheel needed to be replaced. My local indy quoted $1700 sans flywheel. In the end I was able to get a great deal on the clutch kit for ~$550 and then my indy let me do part of the work so the two of us had it done in 4hrs flat. Whole thing cost around $1k. I owed them more just for the education.
The clutch kit for the 3.8 S is actually ~$100 cheaper than the base 3.6 model clutch kit. No sure why.
I would definitely google the clutch kit part number as you will find a range of prices from reputable online shops like ECS, Vertex, etc. Then search on eBay too. I dont advocate buying from eBay but you will typically find the prices substantially cheaper and can use it to negotiate with the online seller or your indy. They will likely quote around $750 for the clutch kit. In my case I found that Vertex had listed the same clutch kit on eBay for cheaper than they listed on their own store. I called them and they ended up honoring it. My indy had no problem with me supplying the parts because they couldn't match the price.

Wow, my indie said a 10 hour job. I will look up my bill. Just had a clutch and flywheel at 53K miles.
We likely could have finished the job in less than 4hrs. We were chatting a bunch, I was taking pictures and we had 30 mins for lunch. We also got held up for 30 mins with the slave cylinder not wanting to go back in.
After spending the day in the shop I understand how the typical shop bills. Any quote you get is easily doubled from the actual work time a competent mechanic could finish the job in. However the mechanics are always getting pulled aside by admin staff to quote a job, giving customers status reports, or customers pop in (like me) for a quick issue or a chat. They work in 30 minutes spurts and then get distracted for 30 minutes but the shop is billing for the full hour.
Its structured inefficiency.

Just for kicks I had my closest dealer price out a clutch. Here it is:

Yup - its bull**** ^. The release bearing is included in the standard Sachs clutch kit so no reason for them to be charging that as a separate line item. I buy most of my parts from my local dealer online parts store (sonnenoemparts.com) which is very competitive with suncoast or pelican, and no shipping. Funny enough the only thing they dont supply is the clutch kit. I think that was done purposely so their service department doesn't get any blowback from customers for overcharging.
