Default Carbon Fiber Trim

Hi,

I'm looking at a 997 with Carbon Fiber interior trim. I know from experience that the Carbon Fiber in 996s didn't hold up well and would crack. Anybody with a 997 with Carbon Fiber who can give me their opinions to how well it holds up?

TIA

I would love to upgrade my cars to CF but I see so much of it for sale with cracks for all generations....They just don't seem to age well...

That's what I'm concerned about, I don't want to purchase a car and find that over the next couple of years the interior needs major refurbishment.

Mine has carbon fiber steering wheel, shift ****, cup holders, center console, etc.

2010 C4S. 109K miles. No cracks ... still looks brand new.

And how is it holding up? Any cracks or delamination?

No cracks. No delamination. No clouding.

Pam loves her coffee so I got a couple of "The Ultimate Cup Holders" and mounted them on the passenger's side at floor level. One mug she used flared at the top and rubbed on the resin. Got a few scratches that I haven't polished out.

We found some AMG mugs at the Mercedes dealer that are great. OK ... that's off topic.

As for the trim ... The carbon fiber still looks brand new other than that one square inch, but that is my fault, not the carbon fiber's fault.

Are you are just looking for anecdotes? If so, then I've seen two Carreras with full CF interior. One had several items cracked. The other, none.
I've looked into OEM CF for my interior and abandoned that mod after asking myself the same questions you're asking.

My pre-owned 2009 997.2 came with carbon fiber trim. After taking delivery I found cracks in two of the pieces: the driver's door pull and the arm rest. Replaced under CPO warranty. Since then there have been no more cracks or delamination, but I don't trust it. It ridiculously expensive to replace. I was told that each part is hand made. I dint know if that's true or not.

Also bear in mind that the arm rest becomes an instrument of torture since the CF is hard. I take it as a sadistic Porsche engineer's reminder to hold the steering wheel properly!

Funny as I have just this week dealt with this on my '12 GTS. Low mile (11k) car, stored indoors. The 'supported' CF, such as threshold, door finishers, are fine, no issue. The ashtray lid, also fine. The center console is a bit of a mess. Cracks in rear, side. Porsche is covering under CPO though I specifically requested 'no thanks' to same material for console. Porsche is funny and is still sending CF. I may get black one and paint it, sell the console as new.

So, the material is great if it has a good substrate, not so great if relying on self support, especially where pressure - such as elbows on a console - fatigue it. Hope this helps.

Thanks everyone, i'll see if i can get a better deal on the car by saying the CF is a risk.
